Antenna Problem(s)
 

Hello everybody,

The antennas on both my 1999 XK8 Convertible and 1987 XJ6(sits in the garage as a collector car lol) have both decided to stop working, in an approx. 3/4 up state. This by itself would be that much of a problem but when I turn on or off my XK8 the electric motor that extend and retracts the antenna makes a god awful noise.

Because of that I am looking to replace the antenna on the XK, I would prefer to not use another retractable one and instead a stubby black one (the kind that don't retract); does anybody know where I can find one that will fit on with out to much of a problem? Otherwise would anybody have advice on which part needs replaced (the metallic antenna itself, the electric motor, or both)

pull it all the way up, wipe it clean and lube with wd40. Then try again. And you may have part of the plastic drive cable broken in the motor, buy a new mast, unscrew the nut at the top and pull the mast all the way out. then remove the motor in the fender, take out the small phillips screw in the middle of the drive assembly to remove the cover and you can take the drive apart easily and remove the broken piece. Then put the motor and drive back together and back in. Raise the antenna and the turn off the radio while you hold the cable down though the hole in the assembly(teeth facing the trunk) the motor wil retrat it on and when all the way down(or mostly) reinstalled the retaining nut around the top and run the mast up and down again. Now youre done and still are original instead of halfassed

Thank you I will try that tomorrow morning, tried once with some WD-40 but I will try again and then do the take-apart thing you suggested.

You probably just need to replace the mast. If the motor is still working, get the replacement mast. It is very easy to replace, if it has not broken inside of the motor. When trying to replace my mast I discovered the plastic gear chain had broken. I removed the antenna motor and disassembled it to remove the broken piece. Re-assembled it and replaced the mast. Replacement mast is about $40.

If you have anymore problems after trying the ideas above, there is a company in the UK called Autoleads who do all sorts of stereo gear. They do universal electric and non-elec aerials. They come with a choice of heads to fit most vehicles. I fitted one to and old Mercedes estate a few years ago and it was a doddle!
