holder
hi mate, have you thought about the vent holder, lots to pick from on ebay,i got one for my satnav and looks a nice neet fit just above the clock as the fitting clip pins fit one in each left and right vent so bang in the center its a very small mount so fits flush with the dash heading when you remove your phone or whatever you need to fit there

Have a look at the Brodit Proclip:
List Jaguar XK8 / XKR 1998 | Brodit
I used these in both my XK8's.

the one in the apple store is really good. "Kenu airframe"
Kenu Airframe Portable Car Vent Mount for iPhone - Apple Store (UK)
its £20 but £20 well spent I reckon. Works very well and couldn't be simpler

I use this, but not with the vent mounts:
Bracketron
It comes with a sticky pad that can be put on the wood part of the dash leaving no residue if removed. Here in the US the last thing we want to do is block the AC vents in the summer! Plus, if you try to remove it from the vents, you may take a few parts of the car with you.

Least intrusive and easiest to mount and unmount the phone.

These offer a lot of versatility:
RAM Mounting Systems, Inc.
By far the most durable of 3 or 4 different mounts I've tried.
I got an X-grip after noticing a colleague runs one on his Harley

I would second the Brodit mounts. They have one with a pass through connector so you dont have to fiddle about connecting a cable every time, and can just drop the phone in.
I have mine wired behind the dash (so no visible wiring) to a Parrot kit which gives charging and both bluetooth and hard wired dock connection to the stereo.
