Anyone made their XK LOUD exhaust-wise?

Sometimes when i watch the some of those performance shows on Discovery and they have a V8 roaring i wonder i fit would suit my car - i do love that sound... i'd like something maybe half-way there?

Half-way? That'll be OK as long as you get no closer to me than Doncaster with it. :icon_lol:

yeah but you'll hear me going by ;)

K.Westra 02-14-2015 05:00 PM

Mine is probably one of the louder ones here:

LondonXK8Boy,

I fitted the (Adamesh) rear exhausts sections which 'do away with' the rear silencers. At first it didn't seem to be much louder but after a few miles they sound just great. I can't hear much inside the car unless I wind the window down but standing behind it while someone else starts it is good. As is letting someone else hammer it away from you, (preferably a trusted member of the family). It can also be driven it sedately/quietly so it's just right for me.

Almost everything about exhaust mods has been said but...

IMHO best method is to start with straight stainless pipes from cats with H or X connection in factory crossover position, internal diameter 2". This setup will be very loud. Than we can add silencers to get desirable loudness and tone.

Electronic cut off valves. Best of both worlds. Here's mine at Spa last year.

That sounds like my old Kawasaki VN1500 Twin with the straight thru long shot pipes. doesn't sound like a V8 (to me anyway)

I tried every delete combination as found the best to be replace center resonator with H pipe, loose the two small boxes just before the last mufflers. I added mina oval tips. Loud, but not earth shaking. And no droan.

Thanks. I should have looked at this before posting my message.

I need to make a decent video. I have a mina rear delete kit, no center resonator, factory cats. Only mufflers left are the tiny ones before the rear. I was going to redo it but everyone seems to love the way it sounds. At idle a slight rumble...When you get on it a little loud but not awful. Id suggest doing the same and if you don't like it...You can always add either a new free flowing center resonator or new rear mufflers to quiet it down

I also have electric cutouts.
The videos above really aren't doing them justice - fully open they sound like the baddest-ass v-8 you ever heard. I hardly ever open them that far!
For a more restrained note they are still pretty nuts anywhere from 10-80% open.
At idle when reasonably open the burble is just astounding, I could listen to that all day long. My only criticism is that they are a bit harsh at lower revs, maybe 1-1.5k, kind of "poppy" if that makes sense. Mine are just after the cats so putting them after the H box might help.

I have a video on youtube but that doesn't get the noise across properly either. it's here, for what it's worth, but bear in mind nothing will prepare you for the sound of these things in real life!
(note the video starts with them shut, then I open them a bit - I don't think they open fully. also I should have put the camera *behind* the exhausts!)

More by accident than design mine is kinda loud. A few years back I was checking it over before having a 700 mile trip down to Seville & found the original system about to part company with the rest of the car. Sunday morning not being the optimum time to purchase a complete exhaust system it was time to scan auction sites etc. Up came a complete stainless system built by Tony Banks of Leeds, in stainless & the intermediate boxes replaced by nicely formed pipes with no "squash" on the bend plus straight through boxes, £250, a 200 mile round trip & a long night under the car & it was fit to go.
Fired it up after a bit of a sleep & damn near s**t myself. fortunately its not too bad in the cabin but outside sounds like my old 6.6 Transam ( loadsa fun in tunnels).
Bonus is with a cold air intake its improved the mpg by about 3 to 4.

jodypress 02-17-2015 01:02 PM

I too considered the SS exhaust system from Tony Banks in Leeds. Only heard good things about them. Cracking price but I also had to factor in a round trip from London, inc. petrol and accommodation.

I went for the cut outs as the option to have them closed on motorway/long runs was important and then to open them up when the roofs down or going through tunnels is unreal.

The amount of people I've had give me the thumbs up or stop and ask makes me smile.

Mine are in front of the centre box and I think I might move them behind as there is a slight drop in performance when fully open between 1500-2500 rpm.

Of course if money is no object visit Tony Law Exhausts of Leeds & get an absolute work of art head back system fabricated, stuff like Len Hartly & Mike "the pipe" Randall used to produce way back, from the sixties to the nineties, more like sculpture than pipework.

I ordered them from the states. Took a couple of weeks delivery and was approx £240 inc delivery and customs.
Found a place near Romford I think who had experience with fitting them. I'll dig out their info for you if you'd like.
