Autobox code 706 again - RESOLVED
 

Hello guys,
well everything was going great guns until Wednesday this week and the 706 code Range sensor cct A returned. This resulted in Gearbox Fault and Reduced Performance notices on the dash. A quick switch off and back on results in no dash indication. I have noticed that there is on occasion a swiring noise coming from the autobox area. Possibly it has not been filled to the correct level is my thought, low on fluid and cavitating?
If this is not the problem and it is in fact the sensor, or a connection, where would you recommend I start? Is the sensor inside the box, and is it easy to get to? :confused:

As I have said before I bought a spare box following the car purchase " just in case ", I have been quoted between £200 to £300 for the fitting of the other box. I think that is reasonable, do you guys?
Its a shame I will have to get new ATF, Filter and gasket if it comes to the crunch though. Dont suppose the ATF could be strained/filtered and reused again ( less that 300 miles of use ). :icon_denk:

Is it P0706 or C0706 or B0706 or U0706? Or not an OBD II code at all?

Is it not in JTIS or already on this site?

Sorry, its P0706 which is for the Range sensor for the autobox.
I have had this problem before when I first bought the car in August last year. Had the oil and filter changed and it was O.K for the first 200 miles but now is playing silly buggers. Cannot drive 2 miles without the fault coming on. Cannot get it seen to until Monday, so its laid up over the weekend which is a shame as it is a good forecast for weather.
Just thought there may be some suggestions for a quick fix, its probably oil level but it could also be an electrical fault, was looking for other opinions.

The JTIS list for your P0706 reads as follows for the 5 speed ZF box

Selector cable adjustment / installation incorrect
D – 4 switch dislocated
D – 4 switch to TCM circuit open circuit or short circuit to ground
D – 4 switch failure
Rotary switch to TCM circuit open circuit or short circuit to ground
Rotary switch failure

No mention of low oil level for this code. The D to 4 switch is in the J Gate while the Rotary switch is on the side of the gearbox.

I'd start with the J-Gate switch.

Many thanks for the above information astromorg, I cannot get JTIS to operate on my P.C so the above info is very important. The car sometimes bumps into gear which may also mean the A&B drums are damaged but this never occurs while driving.
I have a spare rotary switch on the replacement autobox so have most things available to get the job done.

You may be able to get a workshop manual that's not JTIS DVD from ebay. The S-Type one is a huge PDF but does avoid needing JTIS (or even Windows).

The codes are in PDF anyway and can just be downloaded separately or accessed from the folders of JTIS even if it doesn't run.

Update,
Took the Thunderbird 1 into see my local Indy today at 10am. Got a call from him at 1pm that the rotary switch was faulty.Hopefully this is good news. I have a part which came with the replacement autobox, took it down for him to fit.
I also asked him to fit the new fuel filter while he was under the car as its much easier when on a lift.
I wonder how much this is going to set me back? Its £30+vat for the test with the computer, would like to think it will be under £100. Or am I dreaming? LOL's

Well got the call late afternoon that the car was ready. They fitted the new switch, diagnostics and the fuel filter all for £99, which I thought was reasonable.

Quick update, took Thunderbird1 out for a test last night, a good excuse to go for a meal. It was a lovely sunny evening and for a change everything went great. Its the first time I have had the conviction to test the car out and I was quite impressed. No its not a sports car, but it was never supposed to be, it rides a bit more on the firm side than my XJS but the 8 handles better. Each car has its own endearing qualities but if things continue to improve with the 8 the XJS may have some stiff competition soon.
