Autodimming Rearview Mirror Self Repair

Hi All,

I recently decided to try and replace my autodimming rear view mirror because the liquid had split and stained the glass.

New units were about ?500 and I couldn't find a repair service to take it on. So I took a risk and tried to repair it myself. Quite happy with the result and just wanted to share in case anyone else was thinking of doing the same.

There is some soldering involved, two wires to the edge of the glass top and bottom and you need to scrape off and restick the foam cushioning under the PCB but I managed to do this with some trim removal tools and glue.

The hardest part is getting a clean cut around the mirror casing but with a hairdryer and a sharp Stanley knife I was able to get a fairly good line starting at the top so less visible. The bottom of my casing was sadly ruined by the infamous leaking hydraulic fluid from the roof release latch many years ago which melted it.

I used JB weld to stick the case back together and got my glass from mirror John on eBay.

Any way thought I would share in case anyone was thinking of giving it a go and wants to see what's inside before they do.

One day the car will be finished 😂

What am I missing ? Did you re- fill with some magic liquid, or put back together dry ???

@zray believe he ordered a sealed replacement mirror from mirror-john on eBay and just installed into the mirror casing

What, you mean everyone doesn't have a lava lamp for a rear view mirror? I thought it was just a feature.

This is correct - worth noting that the replacement glass comes with the necessary metal contacts top and bottom but nothing else. So everything else needs to be transferred from the old glass unit.
