Banging the Hell out of a Control Arm Bolt

Any ideas on how to get this bolt out.
  • Driver side has no issue
  • It spins freely
  • Banging on it for 30 minutes with a heavy hammer, moves 1/8 of an inch and just stops
  • I cant get an type of spreader in it
  • i have put the nut back on to keep banging since the tap end is starting to give
What could be catching this bolt. I hate to use heat, with the lines running close to the arm, but I guess i can try.

Well done, what was hanging it up - was there a shoulder worn on the bolt ?

now you have the battle to put it back ..if you use poly bushes you can say goodbye to the shims

Are you sure? Won't that affect the Caster and Camber?

Correct, the shims should go back on to set caster (camber is not affected, requires an eccentric bolt), but the stamped washers that protrude somewhat into the original bushings should not be re-installed if replacing with Powerflex poly bushings.

I had the same issue when doing my upper control arm bushings. I don't believe it was catching on anything other than the washers. There seems to be some 'spring action' going on with washers and bushing that really limits the effectiveness of the banging with the limited space. Not sure why the passenger side seems to give us more trouble.

I could see crud build up on the bold, must have fused to the bushing.
