Battery tender
I will be leaving my Jag in my Arizona garage for 5-6 months this summer. I usually have a dead battery on my return in the fall
This year I plan to use a battery tender i am uncomfortable leaving it on all summer but was wondering if I have my neighbor plug it in the month before I return if this would be sufficient. It is a 1.5 amp battery tender |

DISCONNECT the battery!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You can also leave the battery on a 'tender' but I ALWAYS disconnect the battery on one of my jaguars if I plan on NOT driving it for a few weeks! Jaguar used 'transit isolation devices' for the voyage from the factory to North America. I actually have a few because they were NOT returned to Jaguar.(shame on me) |

It is a 1.5 amp battery tender Can’t your neighbor give the car a little observation twice a month to make sure the battery tender is working correctly ? or better yet, can’t someone (neighbor) drive the dang car twice a month at least ? These cars do not take kindly to sitting unused. But in your shoes I wouldn’t hesitate to leave a reputable tender such as NOCO, CTEK, Delran, etc hooked up to a disconnected battery for as long as needed. Z |
I have to store the car for 6 months every winter and I disconnect the battery and leave it on a Deltran battery tender. It starts first crank every May with none of the low voltage issues.

If the charger does not go over 14.4v you will do the battery no harm. Mine goes to 13.8 and no more.
Another way is to get a 7 day timer clock thing and bring the battery ender on for a couple of hours each week. or if you already got a 24hr one set it for 1/2hr per day. Disconnect the negative in this long term set up. |
I'm not convinced about the need to disconnect let alone remove the battery from the car, from all my reading here and elsewhere it seems that a good quality tender/maintainer such as a CTEK can be connected straight up and then left for several months if not indefinitely with zero problems. Notice I said tender/maintainer, not charger!

You are right ..no need to disconnect but the poster is overly worried about the situation.
fine leave it in the car ,use a timer or not as desired. |
I leave my '90 XJ-S on a battery maintainer for 6 months each winter, battery connected. I leave my '01 XK8 on a battery maintainer for 6 months each summer, battery connected. In each case the car starts on the first try, never any ill effects observed. Just check tire pressures, fluid levels, and drive.
DISCONNECT the battery!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
If Bob (motorcarman) says it's okay, you can count on it.
|
The ECM will lose the READINESS MONITORS if power is disconnected but............. I live in a rural county and we don't do the EPA car checking thing. (safety inspection ONLY)
If you need the readiness monitors for state vehicle inspection then leave it connected. |
