bluetooth code read device

So any suggestions on what plug-in Bluetooth device I should get to go with the phone app OBD Check Torque? I recently had a check engine light that came on and stayed on for about 24 hours before it cleared itself. I'd like to know what's going on during those situations. The Android phone app seems to be a good method. But, I'm looking for some opinion from those with a lot more experience than I can claim.
thank you

Wikipedia: The 1.0 version of the ELM327 did not implement copy protection, and the PIC code was copied[6][7] and widely sold in devices claiming to contain an ELM327 device. Problems have been reported[8] with Chinese clones, partially due to bugs inherent in the early code.

Although these pirate clones may contain the ELM327 v1.0 code, they may falsely report the version number as the current version provided by the genuine ELM327, and in some cases report an as-yet non-existent version.[9] The actual function of these pirate clones is nonetheless limited to the function of the original ELM327 v1.0, with inherent deficiencies.
The cheap eBay clones are hit or miss in working. I have several out of which only one works on all three of my cars with OBDII. Another works on one but not the other two and two do not work at all.

The working one does just as it claims in reading and reporting codes and PID's.

Order one of the clones off eBay and if it works, fine, if not get your money back through the eBay guarantee. The real ELM product goes for about a hundred bucks.

You mentioned Android, just be aware, or anyone else out there, if you have an iPhone or iPad, you cannot use blue tooth OBD readers, the bluetooth on iDevices is not compatible with these. They do make wifi OBD readers.

I have the elm327 using the torque app on my droid, works well, the first time trying to make it work was odd, but I think it was my not knowing what I was doing, but it works great. Put the elm in your obd port inside the car, then turn on your bluetooth and pair it up with the elm, then go into the app, make the profile for your car then touch that one you set up and read the codes.

I got my iPod touch working with the PLX Kiwi2 ELM adapter. If you want to go with i devices, bluetooth doesn't work and you have to use wi-fi instead. I'm using an app called OBIE that displays a gauge I'm going to set on temperature as a replacement for the existing "idiot" temp gauge.

Anyone have any luck with FORScan? I can get a the laptop version to connect to a bluetooth or wi-fi device but it doesn't communicate with my 2000 xk8. There is an iPhone version but it's not worth experimenting if the laptop version won't work.

I went on the Elm Electronics website and found there is more then one version of the elm327. I have emailed both their tech support and sales concerning which one would be the best fit with a 1999 Jaguar. No answer. Can anyone offer any guidance? I don't want a knock off as they often don't work. Elm is located in Canada and getting the real thing isn't very spendy. Thank you.

ELM Electronics only sells the pre-programmed computer chips used in the finished products. You need to buy the finished unit from someone else.

The PLX Kiwi 2 is a higher quality product from a reputable company for 69.95.

Or else get the appropriate ebay unit (USB for a PC, Bluetooth for Android, WiFi for iPhone). Most of them work fine and if you by chance get a bad one return it and order another from a different supplier.
