Default Busted XKR - Engine Rebuild Questions

Greetings!

I have been lurking for some time, and trying to gain knowledge for when I finally find an XK8 or XKR to purchase. I am not looking for a cream-puff, but one with mechanical needs to work on and return to full operation.

I recently got wind of a 2000 XKR that appears to have had the dreaded timing chain issue, and the engine will likely need to be rebuilt or replaced. I am not afraid to dive into a rebuild, but am wondering if anyone else has done the same, and where you acquired your needed parts. How much did the rebuild finally cost? Could a 4.2 short block be used?

If I can get the dreaming owner to be more realistic on price, since the car is basically immobile for the duration, I might spring for it should the numbers look good.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

TC

You may be able to repair it on the cheap- a broken timing chain is not always a new engine. But definitely bargain as if it is.

If the owner will let you, you could remove the exhaust cam from the broken side(s) and do a compression check- if you get all numbers over 0, you have a winner.

Thanks for he replies. I made an outrageous proposal to the owner, who countered at a figure that has me thinking seriously about picking it up. My concern is that there is more than meets the eye, but it is sure that some valves have kissed pistons.

I am putting a list together a list of what worst case could be on a rebuild. On an engine like this, with a known chain failure, are pistons, rods, or crankshaft compromised?

Thanks

The bottom ends are pretty robust- however since you cannot hear it run, you are relying on his honesty and knowledge of cars that the chain is the problem. Used engine 1000-3000, replacing a head is sub-$1000 all in.
