Can't remove Coil
 

Attempted to remove Coil. Bolt is just spinning without coming out. I would guess the Brass Fitting it screws into has come free and turning with the Bolt. Anyone have a trick in removing bolt? Once I get it out what's the best way to secure to the Brass Fitting?

if the bolt is just spinning - can you just lift the coil out? If so - then look for a high-heat epoxy to secure the fitting.

Coil won't come out. I tried pulling on bolt with vise grips but it doesn't come out. Since I was going to change the coil I thinking about breaking the plastic around the bolt and removing Coil. Hopefully after that I can pull the bolt out unless someone has a better idea.

Bob - if replacing the coil - then breaking coil plastic would be my next suggestion

while you are in there - check the cable harness to the coils for failed insulation!!! I had several spots where the insulation had come off the wiring and was shorting out causing misfire/lean codes. Short term fix was to wrap each wire with electrical tape until I can replace the harness

Random breakfast-coffee-induced thought: could you remove the cam cover itself with the coil in place then attack the spinning bolt from the underside of the cam cover? I’m half way through replacing my secondary cam chain tensioners and have my cam covers off. The pics show the two offset half-round plastic ‘lugs’ that house the embedded threaded inserts that the coil bolts screw into. My first thought would be to drill a small hole from the underside of the lug to meet the metal insert, drill a small way into the insert then stick a small metal pin/rod through the hole to stop the insert spinning. Epoxy the pin in place. My humble $0.02c. Gaz.

Thanks for the suggestion but I'm not sure that I like the idea of drilling into underside of Cam Cover. Still thinking about what to do. I have another problem that I am working on first.

I had this issue with one of the coil cover bolts. I spun the bolt with a socket while pulling the coil cover gently away from the cam cover. The brass ferrule the bolt screws into is serrated on the outside so it wil eventually grind its way out.

The serrations also make a good gripping surface for separating the bolt from the ferrule, and for bonding the latter back into the cam cover. JB Weld (amazingly sourced locally) is up to the temps and has proven to be a good fix.

This happened to me 3 times. Drives me crazy. Happens when you over tighten the bolt.

I tried everything you mentioned and a few others. Best solution for me was using a mini die grinder with a diamond cutting wheel on it to cut the head of the bolt off. Took a while, but i was able to get the coil out without destroying it or the valvecover.

Resolved. I used an Oscillating Cutter. Actually never had to cut the Bolt head completely off. The Oscillating action of the Cutter vibrated the Brass Ferrule loose. Once I had it out I used JB Weld and reinstalled Brass Ferrule. Let it dry for 4 Hours and reinstalled Coil. Thanks for all the responses.
