It has about 38K miles on it and is in excellent shape.
I have had it worked onover the last year that I have owned it and the Certified warranty was excellent.
Oil leak in the head gasket.
The electronics on the adaptive cruise control had to be replaced.
The passenger seat heater replaced.
Just last week I had to get the coolant lines that run under the supercharger replaced - that was not covered under warranty (ouch).
What should I expect over the next year that would be worth the $4,000 dollar dealer warranty?
I know that it is insurance and it is likely that I will spend some money every year on this sweet car.
I am just looking for debate on the pay me upfront or pay me later quandary.

Hey Jagwatcher,
XKR is a beautiful car and soundfs like you've kept it in great order.
Here's my tuppence worth, although I'd suggest it would be worthwhile posting this into the XKR section for more model specific info....I will copy this into that section for you, so check it as well as look for updates.
Firstly, if your warranty is about to expire, take it to your dealer and ask them to do a thourough check on the vehicle, as they may find work that needs done and it will get them work, so they should be on your side, I'd say!
Further than that its pretty much down to personal taste as with tyres, oil, etc etc whether you think its a good investement. You hit the nail on the head, its Insurance pure and simple
Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Big ticket items during the last year that i've had repaired under warranty are the convertible hydraulic lines, hydraulic rams and steering column (for when the tilt/reach fail). Another small warranty item was the CCV valve and vent tube.

This is always a tough decision which depends on how much confidence you have in the car and/or how much of a gambler you are. When I have opted for an extended warranty in the past, I have gotten the one offered by my wife's credit (warranty is called Member's Choice Mechanical Repair Coverage). This type of warranty added 3 or 4 years past the manufacturer's warranty and is generally a bit less expensive than the warranty from the dealer. The only downside is that it takes an extra day for the repair to happen as the warranty company has to respond to the repair facility request. Nevertheless, I have been happy with this warranty when I have had it.
For my last new car purchase (2000 Acura TL) I opted NOT to get the extended warranty as I had a certain level of confidence in Asian cars. As it turned out, this paid off as I had no significant repairs on the car from years 5 through 7 and beyond.

To continue:
The 2005 XKR that I bought in August is under Select Edition until August 2010. The Member's Choice extended warranty would range from about $1,500 to $3,200 depending on time/miles and level of coverage/deductible. Your dealer's price of $4,000 seems high but perhaps that is a better warranty.
By the way ANY extended warranty might exclude the convertible hose as that type of item is typically excluded in aftermarket warranties.

One other thing to consider is negotiating with the dealer. I've heard that warranty prices are a profit center for the dealer not a free service. The warranty asking price may be twice what it really costs. If the dealer says $4000, offer $2500 or $2800. Worst that can happen is he could say no. Also check with another dealer for the same warranty and see if the prices are the same. Just a thought.

Right, throw an offer at 'em and see what happens. In today's economy they may have the attitude of "a little bit of something is better than a whole lot of nuthin' "

Thanks for tips. I will try bargaining and see if the price comes down then decide. It would only take a couple of part failures to reach $2500. If they won’t go that low then they may have to wait for their profit.
