Cold air intake add much???

On these 4.2 KXR's in your opinion, do Cold Air intake systems add much and are they worth their cost?
Thank you

Stock already is a cold air design, what system are you referring 2?

Markmbaha1 Feb 19, 2022 12:04 PM

I'm sorry after market with the round oblong round...I don't know brand names usually the filter is somewhat open vs boxed in.

Kuddlesworth Feb 19, 2022 12:48 PM

The stock intake is already a cold air intake. Only thing worth doing is replacing the intake tube with the baffels and corregation as this will increase engien sound and may improve airflow but I doubt it will be noticeable. Sound will increase though.

Marmbaha1,
Watch this vid from about 3 minutes onward. It reveals the unique location for some of the cold air intake on our X100's.

I monitor both intake air temp measured at the MAFS and ambient. At highway speeds they differ by 2-3 deg F. Sitting in traffic the difference is much greater, but since performance is inhibited by driving in traffic it seems a waste of money to modify the system.

Although the oiled/foam aftermarket filters are sold as a filtration improvement tests on them when I lived in Australia where it is dusty showed the standard paper had better flow and filtration so its a waste of time changing the original set up

Just to add my $0.02 I replaced the intake tube of my XKR (the one with all the baffles) with the smooth metal tube sold by Mina Gallery (located a couple of miles from my house) but I retained the stock airbox (but have used an K&N filter for years). Maybe it was my imagination but the car seemed much more responsive to even small throttle movements after the tube. At the very least is looks nice:) Search for my other posts about the tube installation.

Its the K &N filters which were more restrictive than the original so a photo of your set up would be useful. Before you can detect any power changes you need a 10% change in power out.put

Here is my take on it

XK8: sound only, maybe 0.5hp

XKR: I went with 3.5" from the TB all the way to the MAF (that will be changed with a Pro-M MAF) to the filter. The one mina sells is 3". You will need heat reflective wrap it to keep temps down. I double wrapped mines and built an insulation wall with rubber seals and wrapped the engine side too to keep the engine bay heat separated. Pickup is noticeably quicker. Before, put your foot down...wait 1-3 seconds, gear kicks down then off it goes. Now, foot down...it goes.

Final product

Another way to do them, is to open the fender all the way from the factory intake all the way under the headlight

Final way is a BMC CDA airfilter that keep IAT down and looks amazing

Hey Man!
Just stick a new K&N Filter in the Box about once a year and forget this "Cold Air" stuff...That's about $70.00 "Bucks" a year for some pretty good Air Filtration....The "Stove Pipe" design by Jaguar is as good as it gets!

When the air intake cracked at the accordion section I replaced it with the Mina version. It wasn't that much more than a new plastic one and is one more thing I don't have to worry about. The only difference I noticed was in the sound department and sounds real good with the Mina exhaust system.

When I got my 98 it had a K& M type filter. Hated the sound. Its a Jaguar not a Shelby. Bought a used filter box assy. on Ebay Happy now!

Now I'm gonna have to try the K&M always wanted a littke more sound. So dang quiet

the best solution is what Doug did. Use the aluminum Mina tube, but Keep the stock cold air box and put a K&N filter unit inside it if desired .

Just putting a K&N filter on in place of the stock box is going to be a negative performance addition, as the stock box brings in cold air from
the wheel well area.

With just the Mina tube you will have more intake noise (as desired I guess) and some performance gain. I don’t know if it will be enough for you notice. But the Mina people say their dyno can spot the increase.

For once, the Jag system works well. If you want more sound, get rid of a couple of mufflers.

Good info thanks for all the input. I may go the replacement tube connected to the original cold air intake.

Z...

Apparently, you have misunderstood my Setup! All I did was replace the Filter with a K&N Filter...I still have all of the Jaguar intake system including the Box...K&N makes a Flat Filter that replaces the Jaguar Filter for about $75.00. With it, you still use the entire Jaguar intake system....Just not the Filter.....I know it has been changed as I can hear the difference....also, I have a K&N sticker on top of the Filter Housing! All this might make it run 1 MiPH faster!!!

Why would you not want the less restricted tube to go along with the new filter?
