Dead flat battery, how to jump start with no boot access?

Hi All,

Any help would be sincerely appreciated.

I have a Dec 2004 XK8 coupe, the battery is dead flat.

However previously when I lost my keys the dealership did not advise about the key access to the boot (which I have only just found out about on here), and that lock has not been changed by the looks, so I now have absolutely no access to the boot at all.

Is there any means of jump starting my car from the engine bay without doing damage?

I bought a Jump Genie which I have plugged into the cigarette lighter but that doesn't seem to have changed anything as nothing works at all. This will be just a flat battery as the car has been parked for some months I should have taken it for a run but did not. So I'm not expecting any other "cause" other than a flat battery from non use.

I would be grateful for any advice at all.

Thanks.

Brett

I believe you can jump it from under the hood under one of the covers near the windshield. Passenger side for us on this side of the pond.

If you lift the bonnet(hood) you will see connections where you can connect a 12v power source to open the boot via the switch inside the car. DO NOT attempt to start the car via the under bonnet connections. In fact I wouldn't jump the car at all unless you know exactly what the procedure is, and even then I wouldn't risk the electronics. Charge the battery fully then start in the normal way. Fit a new battery if you have any doubt about the old one.

Brett, there is a connection that goes right to the battery under the bonnet (hood) by the shock tower on the left, (setting in the car). All advise is never to use this as a jump start, but it can be done. Hook up the positive end on the bolt that is covered by a rubber boot. Ground to the shock tower bolt, that also is covered by a rubber boot.
Do this at your own risk, it works most of the time but will once in a while cause some real strange codes to be thrown.
If you were trying to charge the battery with the lighter, I think you will find the key needs to be on.

Good luck, Wayne

Note: Use to get access to trunk - not to jump start

Connect another battery to the above mentioned terminals under the bonnet long enough to open your boot and then service your battery from the boot (charge it or replace it).

Jump starting this car with a totally flat battery likely will cause electronic malfunctions and even possibly damage.

Jump starting from these terminals under the bonnet can cause real damage as the wiring can melt because it does not have sufficient current carrying capability.

Hi batroute,

Thanks for the tip, any idea where I can find the connection to plug in a 12v power source?

Struggling to find it, eyes aren't quite what they used to be!

These are the terminals under the bonnet:

Thanks everyone, by jumping across to the under bonnet terminals, even without the good battery car engine running, this gave enough power to open the boot, from which I could jump start .

Thanks clyons, much easier with the pic!
