You can send it to a professional and he can disassemble/repair it for about $150 USD.

If a non-expert tried, odds of broken plastic appear very high.

i sent mine to maybe texas, the name of the place is here somewhere..worth it , period don't get a used one, they go out too, the newly refurbished is the modern way to go a real upgrade.

This has been discussed in several threads. I can't recall any member attempting to dismantle the mirror and the usual action is to source a used replacement or send it to a specialist repairer.

Yes, you can dismantle the mirror - you can clean the photochromic fluid out and just use the mirror as a non-dimming mirror, or source a replacement glass to fit yourself.

The mirror is used by a number of different car manufacturers, so you can find very cheap replacements.

The guy in the thread that says the mirror "just pulls apart" is the understatement of the year. It is extremely hard to pull the mirror apart without breaking it. The odds of breaking it during the opening is extremely high. The plastic is very brittle in 2019 and any tool used to open the mirror has to be stronger than the plastic.

When my mirror failed I looked at sending it off to a professional to repair it, but it wasn't worth it. I found someone selling replacement glass for less money and would have tried the repair myself, but I found that a complete second hand 2nd gen mirror on eBay was actually the cheapest option.

Otherwise I wouldn't hesitate to try and open the mirror myself - it's already broken after all - and I'm confident I could do it. The whole point of the forum is to fix things ourselves, rather than pay the professionals.

I have a broken mirror at my computer. I tried for 20 minutes to separate the 1/2's and all that was happening was the plastic was breaking along the seam..

I don't say something is easy or hard until I actually try it. If someone says something is easy and I can do it, then I say its easy. I've been working on cars for 40 years and do all my own work. If I can't do something someone says is easy, Its probably not easy.

There are likely points on the mirror where pressure needs to be applied for the halves to cleanly separate, but if you search randomly for those points, you'll most likely break the mirror plastic before you find those points. Just trying to pop the 1/2s apart with a screw driver will break a lot of plastic.
