Engine would not start, misfire 8, then started and bad noise

I went to start engine, and it would no start, turn over but no start and there was this annoying warning noise. OBD said misfire on 8. Cleared code, waited a little and then the engine started but with a rough idle and bad engine noise, a loud knocking coming from area 8.
I will do a compression test.
I only found one fuel pump relay in the rear for my 2001, is there another one?

and do I remove the fuel injection relay up front?

avern1 08-26-2020 04:38 PM

XK8 only has one fuel pump, XKR has two. There is no up front pump relay.

1-135 psi 2-135 psi 3-135 psi 4-133 psi 5-130 psi 6-132 psi 7-135 psi 8-zero
looks like I need to take off the driver side head and discover what is bad :(

mhminnich 08-26-2020 07:12 PM

Ouch. Hoping that you find something easily repairable. Show us #8 plug.

stevepaa 08-26-2020 07:21 PM

stevepaa 08-26-2020 07:31 PM

how can I add video with sound

mhminnich 08-26-2020 08:34 PM

That would be an unlikely cause. Connecting rod failure is usually a direct result of over revving the engine or extreme distress due to oil starvation and bearing /journal overheating. It's more likely you dropped a valve or seat. Thread a boroscope down the plug hole and have a look.

Wight8 08-27-2020 08:22 AM

Broken valve spring, or stuck valve would be my guess. Borescope and cam cover off for a look.

RJ237 08-27-2020 09:04 AM

The load knock probably indicates a dropped valve seat, valve may be hitting piston, so don't try to start until you have inspected.

stevepaa 08-27-2020 02:25 PM

Well, I will just have to pull that head to see what it is and fix it. I have done several engines, V8, Porsche 911, Subaru boxer. And I have all the tools so I will proceed and take pictures of head when off.

I will get a boroscope as it is one tool I do not have.

one bolt is not being cooperative to remove the engine front cover. Hand ratchet socket is spinning. I sprayed with penetrant and will try vice grips tomorrow, and then cut slot for screwdriver. it is the second bolt down on the far of passenger bank.

How many miles are on this car ? Have you owned it very long ? Do you have the maintenance / repair records ?

just trying to get an overview...

about 115k miles, owned since 2012, and replaced all tensioners and chains, ramps, pulleys, water pump, etc in 2014
I always use a torque wrench. This one bolt just went bad.

stevepaa 08-29-2020 01:25 PM

bolt head split trying to use screwdriver, now need to cutoff

in other news I have a CH-47 and S-46 fire fighting helicopters on a direct line over my house from local airport where Cal FIre has retardent straight to fire that has gained ground south of Mt Hamilton in Santa Clara county. There timing is such that sometimes they pass each other right overhead.

cjd777 08-29-2020 07:29 PM

Stay safe, you can get another car.
Those fires are taking a tole on so many, all the best to them all.

stevepaa 08-30-2020 12:50 PM

Those head bolts are on tight, I cannot get enough leverage from the side of the car, I will need to set hood in upright position and sit in car to get them off.

stevepaa 08-30-2020 03:02 PM

The deep socket wants to back off, it started to round the corners of two bolts. How can I remove these. Impact tool?
thanks

cjd777 08-30-2020 04:49 PM

Air socket 6 sided and let the ratchet do the work.
I would just hit it for a few seconds at a time.

stevepaa 08-30-2020 04:57 PM

that's what i will do
I have never had this issue before with any of the engines I have done.
