Hi all, I have been reading the threads on exhaust and x pipes. I would like to get a little more sound out of my exhaust. Has anyone just removed the last muffler and replaced it with a pipe and tip? How does it sound? Is there someone out there that makes these pipes? Thanks

Adamesh uk has the pipes you are looking for...around $300. us. I got a set and they sound pretty good. Not as good as the Mina system I had on my XK8.

Thanks govatos...that is exactly what I am looking for. I wonder if anyone in the states is making this, (and maybe not stainless) . It seems like something I could try and if I didn't like it I could put back the stock without any damage.

Most of us exhaust-mod participants left those last resonators in tact, or at least replaced them. It was the ones prior to the axle and the center muffler (sometimes replaced with an X or H-pipe) that was the most often deleted or changed.

I brought this idea to my local tech this week, and he responded with support - telling me that removing the center muffler was good for performance as well as sound. He described it as "quite restrictive".

What he couldn't tell me was what effect it might have on the computers that monitor all the exhaust system on an "r" - I'm not looking for more fault codes, warning lights/messages, etc - just some growl for the kitty! Any experences? DaleD :icon_shrug:

As long as you have the O2 sensors intact you won't receive any codes and the computer won't know that the center muffler is gone.

If you look at the pictures of the setup that came with my XK8 the center muffler was removed, I didn't have an X or an H pipe, just straight from the CAT to the resonator then to the muffler. No codes at all and a bit more sound when you press on that go peddle. Quiet when you're on the freeway doing 70 to 80 mph. Just a nice growl when the go peddle is stepped on.

Any competent exhaust shop should be able to remove the last two mufflers for very little money and in very little time. I would have a local shop do it before I would buy the Adamesh system.

I pulled the centre muffler and put in an 'H' then drove 5000 miles with nary a problem. Rinning fine.

I've booked a spot at the local custom muffler shop in a couple of weeks and plan on having the centre muffler removed and replaced with an X-pipe. They quoted $150 - $170 for parts and labor - seems reasonable.

After having done some considerable reading, what is the consensus - X-pipe or H-pipe? Benefits / demerits?

Also toying with the idea of also removing the muffler BEFORE the axle. I watched all the posted videos and thought that the sound could be pushed up a little, but wondered how loud it would be with only the muffler after the axle?

I'd love it to be "Sporty", but not looking for "Boy Racer" db levels......

Any thoughts / recommendations?

I recommend just taking the forward large muffler out and replacing it with the X pipe.

Lew is talking about the 'center', joint muffler.

I recommend removing the center muffler and putting in the H-pipe. The H will be a little louder in volume, the X is very very mild. I wish I had an H...and I'm very conservative.

Don't touch the rear silencers yet...try this first. :)

Why put in an X-pipe or an H-pipe? Why not just remove the center muffler and run two pieces of straight pipe to the back? What purpose does the H/X-pipe serve?

They stop the sputtering noise and make it sound more smooth.

^ yah, no puffing noise (I did this first, no X or H at first) each pipe gets the exhaust pulse from both banks when you add the X or H...evens them out.

I like the H, personally, and you could probably save more money with one, but it is your call.

I found this excellent article (albeit about a Mustang) that describes the operation of the X versus the H. Interesting point of note is that the X yields more BHP than the H (which they verified by dyno), but consensus would seem to favor the note of the H. Ultimately, you could spend a fortune looking for the right mix of X and muffler that gave the sound you wanted. You pays yer money......
