It might even be wise to inspect at 75K mi to see if wear is occuring.

Plastic shoe? What were they thinking? Why all the plastic in the engine?

What did they do for the later engines? This is basically the same V8 Jaguar uses to this day. They only have one V8 engine. X150, XF, F-type etc all use it. I guess they must have changed a few things? Can't we just use the more reliable parts from these newer engines? Even the Aston V8 Vantage is the same engine and I never heard of plastic or the same problems with them, even though they are of the same vintage as the X100. I'm aware the displacement is larger in the Aston and newer Jaguars. But it's the same engine.

If you're wanting to keep it and repair, you can take the engine out through the top. Will just require a different process, but will also require you to crawl underneath to remove exhaust cats to gain access to bell housing bolts.

It can be done.... I guess at the end of the day all depends on how much you wanna spend to repair, and time.

RJ - they did do an inspection at ~164k last June when I had the front crank seal, valve cover gaskets, oil pan gasket and sump replaced. They checked chain tension as well as tensioner condition and noted normal wear but nothing that would warrant replacement.

Jeagar - don't let the plastic parts or my issue scare you away! I have had 6 years of pure driving bliss with Mistress Betty. I bought her with 91500 and 0 knowledge of what to look for or expect. My first trip to the dealer led me to an internet search where I quickly became educated through this absolutely wonderful forum. Others have said it and I will say it as well - this forum is the best tool in an owners tool box!!!!

She has been my daily driver and I have added almost 80K in those 6 years. any mechanical item has the potential to fail at any given time. If we worry about what will fail all the time, it takes away the enjoyment. Find the best example you can, have a prepurchase inspection done and if all good - buy and just drive. The smile on your face will make it all worth it!!!!

JBzXJ40 - yeah been looking over the procedures in JTIS and may be daring enough to try it - not sure as the other half's MB lease expires in Sept which would leave the XE as the lone car unless I could get the XK8 done in that time.

BTW the other half offered to give me $2500 toward the repair - so I'm highly considering!!!!!

Gus - yes will have pics when we open her back up - right now, they buttoned her up and she is at the indie's pending my decision. From what he said though - the tensioner was pretty much obliterated and will have to pull oil pan to get pieces that broke off

Sklimii,
Sorry to hear this - and impressed with your stoicism
Knowing that 3rd gen failure doesn't happen very often isn't much consolation when you're the victim.

I'm sure you will find a solution: I guess it depends what you find if you decide to do a partial teardown and whether the motor needs to come out. At least you have the other half onside

Good luck!

I don't know if you recall the threads I had on the 2000 XK8 I bought with a frozen motor.

This is what I found when the cam cover was removed.

And what I found when the head was removed. I repaired it myself at a cost of about $1000, but I had a spare head and piston that I didn't need to buy.

Very encouraging words. Ok, 80K miles in 6 years is more than most would drive these cars. Fair enough! You had a great go. Treat her well, as given how much she already did for you, she deserves it! Bring her back to the road.

But still, whoever decided to put all the plastic parts in the engine needs to be...

Steve, One of my long time friends runs a recycle yard and I just talked to him.
He does run across one of these cars on occasion and deals with lots of folks. He will look into it today and I will call him this afternoon and see what we got.
Here's hoping we have some luck. I did tell him we needed something in the area, so we can take the valve covers off and have a look. He understood.

sklimii,
I also have over 170,000 miles on my 2002 XKR, and the car is undergoing a restoration at the moment. My son had used the car and sideswiped a truck, so I made the fiscally unwise decision to respray, change suspension parts, new convertible top, and rebuild the engine. I had replaced tensioners at about 120,000 miles, and now I get to worry about it happening again. My original tensioners broke on start up one day, but miraculously, the engine didn't suffer damage. Sorry to hear about your car. I have put over 108,000 miles on the car since I bought it, and I just couldn't part with mine. I figured that I'd end up putting $12-15000.00 back into it to get it to nearly new condition, and what could I buy for that money that would be as satisfying or as beautiful. Good luck with the repairs.

Steve, call this place Matlock's and talk to them. Understand they have a couple of the Jaguar engines we are looking for. I'm not sure, but give them a shot. I can go look at them if you think it's something you might want.
I was told one at $900 and one at $1200, that's why I kind of question it. If not we will get them more information, as I was on my way to the heart doctor this morning and wasn't able to spend a lot of time with my friend.

Ted - ouch on the sideswipe - I feel your pain and am likewise leaning toward getting the repairs done, although I have seen some nice examples for sale. I think I'd be around the 12K mark if I add a respray and a few other fixes but those will have to wait since it is tax time and this year I'm taking a hit.

just to update all - I am going to work with my indie to rebuild the engine - will probably start in the next week or so. If it is beyond hope - have a line a few replacements - thank you Wayne and BobRoy. Pics of the damage will be taken when we start tearing her down.

Default Correction - NOT Gen 3 Tensioners

Well finally got the call that the Mistress is ready to be picked up - lo and behold she DID NOT have upgraded tensioners - still had Gen 1 - pics attached.

I also had them replace the motor mounts and knock sensor - runs sweet but did pull up a 171/174 as I pulled into the driveway. will tackle that in the next week or so but she definitely needs a bath!!!

I addressed with the owner as I asked last June when valve cover gaskets, etc were replaced if gen 1 replace as I would have rather replaced at that time before valves bent. His tech assured gen 3.

I'm surprised she went as long and as far as she did with the Gen1 tensioners.

What was the condition of the cylinder bores?
