Front brake pads, now shifter click!

Ok so I installed my new front caliper and brake pads, job went fairly smoothly, then bled the brakes and all seemed ok. Then I started the car and touched the brake pedal and CLICK. I thought huh. Touched the brake again CLICK. Everytime I push the brake pedal, even gently, I get a loud click from the shifter! Why? Is it just a coincidence that it started now? I did try a search and saw people saying about the microswitch on some, but why would it just start doing it after doing the front brakes?

You should hear a click as the gearshift interlock disengages. However, it should always have clicked or you wouldn't have been able to move the gearshift.

Maybe you're becoming more mechanically sympathetic after the successful brake job. :icon_lol:

That click is the shift interlock solenoid. It prevents you from moving the shifter away from "P" without your foot on the brake. You should also feel it if you put your fingers on the wood trim in front of the shifter. That plastic plug on the surround is to release this solenoid in case this scheme stops working. Seems unrelated to your brake job, but now that you know what it is (and where it is), you can start looking for a solution. FWIW, I heard this in my car a lot when I was messing with the brake switch, but it is now "gone" that the focus has moved on to other things.

Best of luck, keep us posted.

I know it did click before, but it seems louder now. Could just be me listening harder for noises lol smh

I would say “more attuned to weird sounds” or one step further “paranoid.” Still your brake job is done. Ignore the click, until you don’t hear it anymore, then you can worry.

When i I start my car, and for the first five minutes driving, I listen intensely for both normal and any weird noises. After a year of daily driving, I’m still waiting for the dreaded chain slapping sign! LOL
