Front End Shimmy
 

2001 XK8 had a front end shimmy starting around 30 MPH. Had the front tires balanced and it went away. That is until I took it on the highway. Shimmy is still there at 70 MPH and very noticeable. It's not always there. Sometimes at 70 it's fine, At 80 you don't feel it until you let off the gas. If the tires are cupped I can't feel it with my hand. The front end is out of alignment. Would this cause a shimmy? I just replaced the struts and strut supports myself last year. Would this be a factor?

In your earlier thread on this subject I listed the likely worn parts that you could replace in order until you solve the issue.

Have you done any of that yet?

I suggest watching mechanic, balancing your wheels: make sure you see zeros. Sometimes weights get lost, if not installed properly. Go and tell them to balance again.

I have not. Havent had the time or money for that yet.

Be sure the road isn't grooved where the shimmy occurs. Road grooves can transmit shimmy back to the steering wheel on an XK8 more than any car I have ever driven..

I was getting the same shimmy at the same point on my daily commute. and it corresponded to where the road grooves started. My car has new wheel bearings, new control arm bushes, new ball joints and new inner and outer tie rods.

I found that new steering rack mounts mitigates this slightly. The car still transmits a lot of road data through the steering wheel.
