Front seats: sluggish and squeaky when adjusting

Hi all,

I am on a mission to refresh the interior of my XK8 (x100) Sep 2001. The passenger headrest does not operate, but I've seen video's how to repair so I'll start there. Despite this issue the chairs function as intended except for showing their age - they seem sluggish and squeak when being adjusted.

Is it possible to disassemble, lubricate etc for improve performance? I don't adjust the seats very often, but when I do it makes me feel like I've bought an old rust can and not a beautiful classic car.

Any ideas, links to write ups and/or video's preferable would be hugely appreciated.

Cheers

JB

jonnyautyo,

Well, good news, it's possible and relatively easy to get in there to check & lubricate. First thought for your bad seat travel, is that rubbish, trash and dust has got into the runners and/or worm gear. Once the seat's out it's easy to clean and lubricate it all.

There's a YouTube video available showing how to remove the seat.

One thing I would add to the YouTube video, is that if you're intending to remove the seat base mechanism from the actual seat, press the button to raise the seat as high as possible before you remove the seat. It makes access to the base fixing bolts much easier.

Also I've a recent thread (link below) with some pictures of what you can expect in terms of what the seat base mechanisms look like. Your seat diaphragm is probably upgraded to the "sprung basket" rather than my rubber diaphragm.

David, great video. I was about to warn johnny to carefully watch how that plastic runner attaches. I spent way too much time trying to figure out where the latches were for reinstall- now I see it's just 2x sided tape!

Thanks for posting it

John
