Default weak ratchet J gate shifting

I like to shift my 03 XKR through the gears when I go back road driving. When I shift from gear to gear it does not seem to ratchet in securely like my XK8 shifter. Is there a tension adjustment on the J gate shifting assembly to make the shift points on the J gate stiffer? Anybody have any ideas on this? Is this normal?

Bill,

Can't say whether it's normal but mine is the same.

The 2001 XK8 used to feel as if it was clicking into place on the intermediates in the J Gate. Although the 2005 positively hits the individual gear positions, it certainly feels 'softer' to move than the earlier transmission.

Hi Graham

Thanks for the reply. When shifting it hits all the gears OK, but it justs feels like it is well worn when compared to my 01 XK8. If yours is doing the same thing it might be normal. My Jag Club has a get together today and one of the members has an 04 XKR. If he shows up today I will check his out to see if has the same feel as mine. In 03 they changed the gear box to the 6 speed, so maybe with the new six speed shifter, they made it shift easier!! Sounds logical.

Cheers

Hi

For the 6 speed transmission, the left (manual) side of the J-gate is not physically connected to the gearbox. You are just operating a spring loaded electronic switch that tells the Transmission Control Module, fitted to the gearbox, what selection you have made.

So , no there is no way of making it more feel more positive.

Only the P R N D positions actually operate the gearbox selector, via cable,

Derek,

A good and concise explanation.

I should have checked for further posts before spending an hour with JTIS.

I don't find JTIS is very user friendly, can take ages to find things.

If you don't have a copy it is worth downloading this technical manual http://matt.zenfolio.com/2003-xk-ser...ning-guide.pdf , for the 4.2 updates.
Makes interesting reading - pages 8 and 9 detail about the transmission.
