Help with gas tank latch
Hey guys! I need help with my 1999 Jag XK8. The gas tank latch was broken when I bought it and was attached with duct tape. So, one day I decided the duct tape had to go. Turns out the back edge of the latch that slides into the door of the gas do-hickey is broken. Does anyone know what that black piece of metal is that holds the door closed. The release works fine, I just can't get the latch back on and would rather replace it than go back to the duct tape solution. Any ideas????

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to XK8/XKR forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.

Fuel filler release striker HJA3097AD is PLASTIC, not metal.
See if this is what you need. bob |
That precious little plastic piece is $30 at SNG Barrett, $40 at the dealer. Poster child for the absurd prices for small things unique to a high end vehicle. Mine works just fine after some JBWeld repair.

Can someone 3D print these from metal?

i've got some JBWeld. Think I'm going to use a penny as the piece to go in the slot on the fuel door. It's the right size, just got to give it a shot. Thanks for the info!

Don't assume prices mentioned in threads are correct. They do change down as well as up.
HJA3097AD is 8.43 UKP ($10.43) from Jaguar Classic Parts in the UK: Part no. HJA3097AD | Fuel filler release striker parts from Jaguar Classic Parts UK Forum Sponsor S N G Barratt lists HJA3097AD at $13.49 inc tax and they may give you 10% discount for mentioning forum membership. What a coincidence...

Just last night my filler door failed to close, and today I see this thread.
Is that t-shaped cutout on the lower left the place where the part is missing? Does it just push into the filler door? I looked at the picture of HJA3097AD and it doesn't look like what I seem to be missing. There is a mark on the outside of the door that looks as if someone might have pried the door open in the past, but it has always worked since I bought it, and I never looked at the inside of the door to know how it looked before it failed last night. |
Google comes up with this:
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...4ada4bd8e7.png Part "1" has grooves on the left side that fits into the T cutout on the lid. This post has a partial picture: xk8-fuel-cap-magnet-143409/#post1237844 |
Yeah, SNG Barrett cut their on line price in half from a year ago when I went shopping. Free shipping at the moment . . . never mind . . . it is out of stock at this time.

So my first attempt at the JBWeld with a penny in place of the part that slides into the fuel door was a FAIL! Didn't close the door all the way and I kept tugging and pushing it until I broke the weld thing. Not giving up yet. Will try again this week. Thanks for your help, everyone!

Here's where I just got the part. Came in three days USPS amidst the holiday traffic. Best price; great service.
