Help with Tire Selection
I have a 2005 XKR that appears to have come with 18" wheels if the sticker on the door is correct. Someone changed them for 20" and installed 285/30 on the rears and 255/30 or 35 (I think) on the front.
I took a long trip last weekend and don't like the ride (too rough) so I'm thinking about getting tires with larger sidewalls but I don't know what would fit. I know it can/will change the speedometer too but that's less of a concern than the ride. I could always go back to 18" wheels but would prefer to not have that added expense if a 20" higher profile tire would fit on it. Any thoughts/ideas would be welcome. |
The stock tire/wheel sizes are listed under the armrest for reference. Going out of what is specified will likely not get you where you want to be. You will likely want to change your wheels to something smaller (and fitting your brakes!), and get the corresponding new tires. Assuming the wheels/tires you have are stock and in decent shape, you should be able to sell them for the cost of these smaller wheels. Then the net expense is just your new tires for the smaller wheels.
Have you checked and adjusted your tire pressure? Unlikely to be a huge change, but every bit helps... |
Here's what my rims look like. As you can see they aren't stock. I was told they were very expensive when bought but I'm not sure how much I could get out of them. I would be willing to trade straight across for OEM Jag rims.

I would replace those wheels just on principle. Those are just not right for that car. :icon_doh:
Here is a good deal ($650) on a set of 18" Double Fives from an 02 XKR with new-ish Conti Extreme Contact tires. https://tampa.craigslist.org/hdo/pts...559690088.html https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...d6895ce1ea.jpg Would look a lot like this https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...f0000c5f38.jpg |
Those would be excellent. I sent him a query about what it would cost to ship to me in LA.

Double check these will fit with the big Brembo brakes...
|
What's the best way to do that besides trying them?
They came off a 2002 XKR but that doesn't mean it had Brembo (which mine does). |
Exactly, these are wheels that came out for the earlier XKR without the Brembo brakes.
There is a TSB, but it is not definitive:03 XK specs.pdf |

with Brembo-brakes they (the Double 5) will not fit (without spacers), due to rim offset/disk depth. |

I wouldn't be adverse to this. I have read you can find spacers on eBay. What do I need to look for?

The Brembo's will fit the 18" radius 'Double 5's' but you will need 15mm spacers on the front. :icon_sad:

Are you saying my rims are Apollos? I didn't know what they are. If they already have the spacer I wouldn't need one.

Yeah my Apollo wheels are not brembo friendly.

Yes your wheels are f-ing great, brakes are normal, nothing to justify. :) The 305 mm discs at my 97er are humble, and then the 17" Revolvers........ I love it! |

I was wondering about that. When you look at the photo it kind of looks like there might be ones at least on the front. There is a different colored area where the wheel meets the rotor. The rotor is obviously rust colored.
