How are the door hinge bolts accessed?
 

Hello guys;

My driver's side door is angled down a bit, and it lightly hits the sill, etc when I close it. I've seen other door hinge threads that say there are 3 bolts between each hinge and the body that can be adjusted to manipulate the angle or height of the door.

I see those three bolts, but I can't figure out how to access them. Very, very tight.

Does the door need to come off to access the bolts holding the hinge to the body? That would make things harder, because one would have to adjust the bolts blind, and then re-install the door to see if the bolts were adjusted correctly. And so on, and so on.

Anyone have any wisdom to share? Brutal?

JTIS doesn't have anything (that I can find) on the door hinges...someone please enlighten me!

If you was to remove the doors the nuts are on the inside of the door, it is very easy actually to take them off as there is a plug to detatch the loom, to remove the hinges as well you have to get inside the A post, much more difficult to do and you working blind by feel alone.

There are packing pieces you can fit between the door and hinge to change its position, these are thin metal shim with slots cut in them so all you need to do is loosen the hinge and slide them in.

The way I do it is to position the door with it shut and the hinges loose, pack everything out to get a good gap and then tighten the nuts

For my door, there is normal gap along the bottom at the end of the door where the hinges are, but almost NO gap at the bottom below the door handle. So the door seems to be angled down, as it sweeps towards the rear of the car.

So it seems the fix would be to slightly adjust the angle of the hinges as bolted to the body, is that correct?

It's actually 3pm here, I am working myself up for the new years party :)

What I would do in your situation is fit a packing shim to the bottom hinge only, this will tilt the back edge up a little, take a look and see if there is one in the top hinge and remove that one, it is very much a trial and error kind of thing.

To align the door, you need to remove the inside door panel and access the three nuts on each hinge, adjusting accordingly for correct fit. Spacers may be required to shift the door upwards. However, you will be able to open and close to check fit.
Reverend Sam has a video for removing the door panel to access the inside of the door.

Tony, when you say try a shim on the bottom hinge only, do you mean between the hinge and the door, or between the hinge and the body?

Sounds like you're talking about the hinge and the door, but I just want to be sure.

Does anyone have any thoughts on where they might be found? I don't imagine this is a Jag or dealer-sourced part, is it?

Perhaps something simple can be fabricated DIY.

They are a proper Jaguar supplied part, could not tell you right now what that number might be, I do have some XJS ones which I beleive are the same I will check when I am back to work on Tuesday
