How hard to remove driver's door?
 

I just got a price quote on welding my torn metal by the lower door hinge to fix my sagging door.

Bring door to them: $100. One day turn around.

They remove and replace door: $300. 5 day turn around.

As you can imagine, the first option looks mighty attractive. I know some of us have pulled the door, I cant recall the degree of difficulty. Rather than search the archives, I'm launching this thread to consolidate the issues for future reference.

Could someone who has done this please share what's involved ? I'm hoping I can get the door off without touching the front fender. There's got to be a way to get the hinge pins out right?

How much do you figure this door weighs, less than 100 pounds right?

The door is very heavy and to do properly you will need to make a cradle for the door to sit in while removing and installing the door. I paid $250 for shop to do mine, took 2 days.

For an excuse of that quality, I'm almost prepared to stump up the $300 myself.

Graham, I cant count how many times I've reposted info someone could have looked up or how many times I've posted for someone's future reference.

It wasn't an excuse, seemed logical, appropriate, and helpful in the long run for all.. This thread can have price references, instructions about DIY door removal, and info on what one is getting into.

If blindside and michaelh hadn't liked it is I'd have probably written this off as you a moderator joking around. I'm still trying to give you each the benefit of the doubt but all kidding aside I hope this doesn't diminish the original question. Unfortunately $200 and time without a vehicle is a big deal to me right now.

1. Remove interior door panel
2. Undo wire harness at body (unscrew counter clockwise)
3. unscrew two bolts in the middle of (upper I think) hinge
4. remove circlip on hing pin (bottom_?) support door and remove pins, remove door
5. installation is the reverse of removal.

Easy peasy. It looked way more daunting until I did it. Smarter-than-me-folks: please chime in if any of this is off base.

John, I transplanted a door from a 97 to a 2000MY. I couldn't recall
how I did it, old age brain fart. I did a search and I apparently posted the procedure.
I remember that it only took me a few hours and wasn't that difficult. I hope

I use a small scissor lift/platform like this when removing the doors, it makes life much easier as the doors are so heavy. I have done it single handed but the chances of casing damage is high, much better to have a second person to steady the door.

Sounds like you had the same problem as me. A sagging door which some one said, with good intentions, 'Jack the door up to straighten the hinge' . One word.......... don't !!
