how hard is it to replace brakes and roters DIY 05xkr ?
My 05 xkr front roters are starting to squeek ..took it to a jag dealership gave me a estimate of 3k!! Front and back .is this the normal cost for a brembo brake and roter job ?? Also how hard is it to change the brakes and roters by myself ..I have changed my brakes on my Honda countless time just scared to touch the jag :( ..any advice would be great ..hate such a beautiful automobile stopping at a stop light and than you hear a annoying squeek :-( help !

Are your pads low, or are they just squealing?
If it is just squealing, sometimes doing some repeated very agressive braking will remove the glaze on the rotors and stop the squealing. Just find a safe place to do it. |
+1 on doing a few stoppies.
Another possibility if the pads are still good is to pull them out and regrease the backs AND shoulders. The Brembo pads go in from the back of the caliper. Remove two cotter keys, two pins, and the anti rattle spring and they will come right out. When it does come time to replace, there are a number of aftermarket options that are way way cheaper than the Brembo branded parts. I used Centrics rotors (non-cross drilled) and Hawk pads. Total was about $300 for parts in the front and the same for the rear. Working on these cars isn't more difficult than other vehicles, and in some respects they are easier, IMHO. |

Here's the JTIS sections on front and rear Brembo Disc replacement. They include instructions for the Pads: Attachment 22984 Attachment 22985 Having done your Honda, the only difference should be the park brake adjuster on the rear brakes. Take all the advice available on sourcing parts and whether to go OE Brembo / aftermarket / drilled / grooved discs and pad material. The choice you take will make $$$ difference to the total cost. Might be a good idea to do a fluid change at the same time if it's still on the original fluid. Graham |
Looking at the JTIS replacing the pads only is easier than on previous cars I have owned. You don't even have to remove the caliber from the disk. Just pull the pins and lift out the pads.

Look out for the Brembo caliper bolts, they are in with Loctite and can strip the uprights if pulled out with too much force too fast, such as with an air impact tool. Mine were a bear to remove with a TWO FOOT BAR! The removal force was about 180 ft lbs. They would have cross threaded if I had not done them by hand.

does anyone know of any aftermarket pads and roters that preform better than brembo for cheaper price?

The rears aren't so bad because they are smaller but the fronts... oh my lord were those hard to get off. Some oil and a good long soak is advisable before giving yourself a hernia. Be sure to torque them back to spec too, there have been a few reported cases of them backing out after some time when not put in tight enough. |
When I had some other servicing done at the dealer last year they recommended rear pads for my Brembo's. Dealer quote was $550.46 for the rear pad replacement and another $198.52 to replace the brake fluid. At the time the brakes were squealing like a sonofabitch. I went to my local independent guy and the TOTAL charge for new pads (Akebono) and the fluid flush/change was $250.
The Akebono pads are not only very quiet but also much less dust compared with the Brembo. Doug |
