Default How much to budget for maintenance costs for an XKR?

I'm thinking of buying a 2004-2005 or so XKR coupe with about 30k miles. About how much would I have to expect in maintenance/repair costs per month? By the way, I will drive about 1200 miles a month.

I hope it's not much more than $100-150!

Hahaha, well I was wanting an XJ8, but then I started looking at XKRs and seeing how absolutely gorgeous they are. If the XKR isn't any more expensive to maintain/repair, I think I would rather have that than an XJ8 VDP or XJR.

Truly, both engines and transmissions are of the same generation. Suspension on the XKR is different, so is the brakes/rotors. Those are the most expensive repairs on the XKR from what I hear. Its a wash really... air suspension repairs = $ xkr brakes

What is this that I hear about the XK thru 2006 essentially being the same chassis as the XJS (30 year old design). Is this true?

Are you doing the work yourself ? If not, don't buy this car as the Jaguar dealers in my area charge $145/hr labor. They charge 1hrs labor to just diagnose the problem, even if you tell them what it is. Parts from dealer are just crazy prices example I needed an O2 sensor they charge $605 per sensor. I got mine on eBay for $65 each. People have paid $900 for transmission fluid change, I did it for $105. So as you can see if you cant do your own DIY and the car is not under warranty I would stay away from high end cars in general i.e Porsche, Jags, Mercs, Audi.

I have an Audi A5 2010 Quattro, S-Line + all options Dealer said they had a maintenance deal for all the services to 35K. Which if you check the manual is 4 oil changes. Their deal $750!! I just bought the Oil and filters for the first 2 at a cost of $93.

Sorry, not sure about the chassis. And the reference to the engine/transmissions being the same is related to the 4.2L and ZF 6hp26.

I can do maintenance work myself (i.e., work that can be done on a schedule and be anticipated). What I cannot do is things that break suddenly and without warning, which require immediate repair (I need the car to get to work!).

Are there good independent Jaguar mechanics in most areas?

I have had a 2005 XKR coupe for almost three years and I have not found it much different to care for then any other vehicle I have owned. Key factors: Buy your parts online as there are several good sources (very big savings). Practice good preventive maintenance. Locate a good Jag tech/mechanic. Don't drive the car like a hotrod and participate in this forum. The XK8/XKRs are outstanding cars and they are a real bargain in todays marketplace. Of course find a good car to start with.

I had a 98 XK8 coupe for about 4 years and have had an '05 XKR coupe for 1 year. Although my R had a few more problems, maintenance costs were about the same. Like it was mentioned before brakes and rotors are going to be considerably more with the R and handling package. I also think some suspension stuff is more as well, but much of the car is the same as an XK8, or an XJ for that matter. And what was also said, if you can do much of the work yourself you will be roughly even. I'd go for it, its a wonderful car, but an R is much sportier -- ie rougher ride than the XJ. If that is what you are after, than that's fine, but if luxury touring is what your after than it can be harsh.

Thumbs up

Yup even though I hear peoples horror stories I've owned my car since 2004 and only problem I've had is an O2 sensor ($65 each I changed all 4) go and thermostat $56. I have done a lot of preventative maintenance, trans fluid, brakes, coolant, 2nd tensioners, belts, 5K oil changes, fuel filter, air filters e.t.c. I do very little miles as I work from home i.e. 24K miles since Fed 2004.

I love the car and nearly sold it a few months ago but could'nt let it go LOL I will keep it for at least another 2 yrs then get a 2010 XKR or Aston Martin.

If these cars start to become collectible and I think they will because they look so great then you will not be able to pry it from my oily hands!!

Default Better than a BMW

I have owned older BMWs and Now have a 2000 XKR. Compared to the BMW the Jag has been way more dependable. Very few repairs. Maintenance is basically the same cost as other cars oil changes brakes ect.

Just remember that most people come here to solve problems. There are many cars out there that have had relatively few problems. The 04 XJ series is known here to have a lot of problems, but I have had no real problems with mine at all. I love my reliable Jags!!
