Jaguar x100 in car microphone
 

I am installing a Parrot MKi9000 in my 1998 XK8 convertible. I was lucky to find a Jaguar x100 in car microphone with wired plug. I removed the overhead light system and found the factory installed harness plug for the microphone. The question, where does Jaguar usually place the microphone?

Adjacent to the roof console. closer to the driver I believe.

However, if you intend to use the Bluetooth with the top down, you should you the dual microphone included with the Parrot kit to take advantage of its noise cancellation feature.

+1 to both location and sound quality.

I've had OE Jaguar Bluetooth in one XK8 and Parrot in another. Apart from the Parrot offering more advanced functions, callers told me the sound quality with the Parrot installation was much clearer.

The OE Jaguar Bluetooth performance is improved in my current XK but Jaguar have moved the microphone to the screen pillar on this model.

I too intend to use the existing wiring to hook up a mic. Apart from the overhead console bracket disintegrating when I removed the cover, I do have a couple of questions.
1. Would the location indicated, which looks like a good place, be suitable for the mic.

2. Are the green and white wires indicated the correct ones for the mic.

3. Where can I pick up the mic wires under the central arm rest?

Here's the OE microphone on my RHD 2005 XK8 Coupe. The LHD has the microphone on the opposits side of the overhead console. I think the Convertible has the microphone fitted to the header rail.

On my 2001 the mic wires were indeed white/green with a braided sheath. You should be able to find a loose yellow connector under the armrest which has all the wires you need for a hands free kit - on mine this was already connected and went to the module behind the back seat, but if you don't already have a phone kit it should just be loose.

On mine it was one of these - I can't remember whether it was the male or female.

Thanks for the help. Although you didn't mention my suggestion of mic placement behind the mesh, I'll give it a whirl and see if the old lady can hear me! I do have a yellow connector not connected to anything and there are green and white wires going into it.

I'll hook up some testing clips to the back of the connector and do a continuity test to make sure I have the correct wires.

Hopefully I end up with bluetooth/MP3 to my phone and radio. I have successfully hooked up a rearview camera to the NAV unit. I'm now going to quit the mods and soak up the Malibu sunsets. Thanks again for your help.

It sounds like I wasted my time with post #5.

The microphone is very unlikely to be effective if placed inside the overhead console.

Apologies. I read that your vehicle was a coupe and skipped over the remaining part. I read somewhere that the mic was positioned in the console but I will follow your advice and mount it somewhere on the header rail.

Did you find the right connector in the end? If you are having difficulty identifying the correct one, the electrical guide for your car will have all the wire colours and pin numbers to help find the right one.

On mine the pin numbers/wire colours are as follows:-

+12 v bat pin 4 brown with red stripe wire
+12v ign pin 5 green wire,
mute pin 6 blue wire,
audio + pin 7 blue wire,
audio - pin 8 blue with yellow stripe wire,
mic+ pin 1 white wire,
mic-, pin 3 green wire, and
mic sheath pin 2, braided

You can buy a matching connector on ebay - its a Sot 065 and will be listed as being for a Hyundai.

Yes, I figured out the wiring thanks. Useful info on the connector for the future. I actually soldered the mic in with shrink tubing. I'll post pictures of the mic location when I'm done.

Actually Graham it was exactly what I wanted to know.

One last question though - was yours a factory fit or a retro-fit?

I'm finishing an installation of a bluetooth system in my 97 XK8 convertible and was also looking at the spot in the overhead console that you pointed to in the photo. It certainly looks like that would have been intended for a microphone. Mind telling us where you ended up putting your mic? I don't see a good alternative in the convertible XK8, at least nothing that won't look like an afterthought.

Thanks, I saw that above, but it's for a coupe. I have the convertible XK8. I noticed that some later years mounted the mic on the A pillar, but I prefer not to go there. If the center spot on the overhead console isn't for a mic,, I'm wondering what was supposed to go there. Anyway, I'm going to clip my mic there before drilling the hole to see how it performs. If it works ok, I'll permanently install it there and post the results here.

Sorry, I forgot to post the final mic placement. Works very well, even with the top down.

Much appreciated. As I mentioned above, I'm going to try it with the console removed and the mic clipped in the center facing towards the back. I've installed the JAGCD-HF bluetooth module on my radio, and the manufacturer indicated that their mic is non-directional. I'll post the results here in a few days after I get the console reassembled. This was all part of a much bigger project fixing the stereo system and adding Bluetooth https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-story-201058/, installing a new DVR front camera mirror and backup camera (upcoming post when I'm finished), and replacing some burned out bulbs that I've been working on/off for about a year.

To address the other question: isn't that spot on the console for ultra Sonics related to air bag deployment?

From the TSB that I read on the ultrasonic occupancy sensors, it appears that they didn't deploy that option until 2001, and it references the "grille" style shown in the photos above vs. the one in my '97 that just has what looks like a circular "knock out" with nothing but a plastic clip behind it to hold something cylindrical in shape. Hence, why I thought it might be for a microphone. For the grille style console, the TSB refers to the occupancy sensor being mounted behind the grille and aimed at the passenger seat vs being in the center spot where clear space facing towards the rear is located. I've searched parts blowups for this console, and there is no mention of what might have been intended for this spot. Perhaps that will remain one of the mysteries of XK8 known only among an elite few who worked on the design...
