Ok done at dealer, total cost for donuts coffe and programing extra key $85, not to bad, paid $10 for key and $29 to get it cut locally. Dealer had wanted $300 for total job. So saved a little. Locksmith who cut key said 01 key couldn't be cloned that's why went to dealer, my own research seems to agree with him only 97-00 would clone. At least now I feel a little more secure having a second set of key and fob.

I tell ALL my customers to have more than 1 key and when they don't listen, I can't help them when they call to cry that the key is lost and what are they going to do???????????

Every car I buy I make sure I have more than 1 key.

As stated above, I think up to 3-4 keys will program as long as they are in vicinity of the column keyhole. Had locksmith in KC, Mo. cut transponder key for my 03 and then got local dealer to program. Should have bought another 2 keys extra ($45 Ea.), but 2 keys should be OK. Dealer was unable to order correct key from Jaguar. They tried but it failed to operate the lock cylinder.

Somewhat off topic, but you'll see why the following came to mind. Although I tend not to lose keys, I do lose glasses (spectacles) all over the house, and sometimes outside, when gardening. I take them off for close work, and that's it. On the principle that if I have more glasses I should find them more easily, I now have six (lost all but one pair, broke them, bought four more, found two afterwards). However, contrary to common logic, it now seems that I am actually six times more likely to have no glasses to hand.

So I keep one key on my keyring and one in a drawer. If I had any more cut I would probably have to walk everywhere.

Where did you get the key and how did you find someone to cut it? I have a 2000 with only one key. The dealer wants $350 for a key and remote. I would like to find a cheaper way to get it done.

You can get a remote off Ebay or similar and programme it yourself. It's a bit of a black art and may involve standing on one leg whilst sacrificing a chicken, but it can be done. Lots of information if you do a search on XK8/R + remote fob programming.

Key is different and is not a DIY job but it's not always necessary to go to an expensive dealership where coffee and donuts are included !!
Any half-decent locksmith can supply and cut a key providing you have the Tibbe code or another key to copy. It's the internal transponder that requires specialist kit to programme.

Hi john 55
how to program key fob is in the DIY Sticky and DevonDavid is correct , I got my key off EBay and the remote from RemotesRemotes.com. Call a reliable locksmith in your area if he cant cut a Tibbie key perhaps like me he can steer you to someone who can.
In my case a dealer was required to program the key through the car, however I am not sure if your model needs them, a locksmith with the right cutting tool can clone earlier models than mine . Perhaps someone else on this forum will see this and answer more definitively.

US '97's use dumb keys and don't need cloning. Any Key will work.
