Key transponder question...

Hiya folks,

So, I need to replace the transponder chip in one of my keys for a 2002 XKR, as far as I can tell there’s two types, ID13 and ID48, it would seem that the ID13 is the XKR one but it’s described as compatable with XKR 1999-2001, and mine is a 2002... so will an ID13 work? I can’t find anything else.

To the best on my knowledge, the system changed in 2001, from the older Megamos 13 to the Megamos 48. My US '03 4.2L definitely needed the ID48. Might be several variants, too. I ordered an ID48 model compatible with VW as well. Make sure these are sold a new. If used, they can be locked with a "dealer code" for another brand. Used from Jaguar would probably work, though...

Why does it need to be replaced? To my knowledge, these devices are write-only, so all your keys (including valet!) will have to re-coded, so a good time to add spares if needed. Just curious.

Ahh, very good! So you think I’d be better getting an ID48? I was put off because all the listings for ID48’s say XJ and XJR, no mention of XKR’s, where as the ID13’s did say XKR, but only 99-01 :-/

I’m doing the old turn a x-type flip key into a XKR key, but instead of butchering a perfectly good original XKR key I’m buying the parts new. The transponder is the last bit I need :-)

I did the same a number of months ago. Pretty happy with the result. These ID48 are cheap on eBay. How do you plan to pair up this transponder to the car?

Great, ID48 it is, thank you!

The same lock smith who’s cutting my key blade is coding the chip, I’ve already done the lock/unlock/lights/boot bit :-)

Are you saying that we can use specified for use in VW cars only,
can be used, for example in 2004 Jaguar?

The technology is developed/owned by a supplier company (Thales?) that sold this setup to several manufacturers, Jaguar and VW included. To avoid the awkwardness of a VW key being "worked" by the Jaguar software, one of the steps in the programming of the chip is to "lock" it with a "dealer" code, a basic password. To my knowledge, this dealer code is really a brand password, unique to VW or Jaguar. This is why you have to buy a chip sold as NEW, to be sure it is unlocked. If you want to buy a used chip, then it has to be specifically from a Jaguar (so the Jaguar software can unlock it). These chips are fairly cheap, you may have to just get one and try. Does your car call for the ID13 or ID48?

I think ID48
What is confusing me is this: ID48 T6 Crypto Unlocked Chip For VW /Audi /Seat /Skoda /Porsche

If it's unlocked then what difference does it make?

Should work, but you will have to get it to confirm. Searching for "Jaguar Megamos id48" comes up with hits with that T6 version. These are not expensive, and as sold unlocked, should be OK.
