Long Term Sluggish Response Problem Solved
Many months back I started a thread whingeing on about the sluggish throttle response in my yr 2000 XK8. I only realised it had the problem when I bought a yr 2000 Sovereign which, as soon as I touched the throttle, rocketted off. A solution was not forthcoming but a couple of peeps did post that felt they had the same problem. This post is for those people.
After a lot of trial and error by other XK owners in the UK we eliminated the TPS and the throttle body as the cause, and finally located it in the MAF. A new MAF off of eBay (£65 delivered) totally changed the car. Now if I push the pedal down (even a tiny bit), it accelerates. Previously it didn't until the pedal had moved a lot. So if you feel that your throttle cable is connected to a sponge instead of the butterfly, change the MAF! |
Did you try cleaning the sensor wires before replacing the whole unit? I've always wondered if "new" was better than "clean".

Good to know. I would think that a severely-restricted MAF sensor would cause the system to throw a fault code....

The MAF was cleaned with no effect. No fault codes showed either as I suspect the MAF was 'a bit off' rather than totalled.

If you suspect there's a problem just unplug the MAF. The car will run very lumpy and might stall on tickover, but it will run with 'restricted performance' (limited to 3000rpm), but if it suddenly goes much better then the MAF is faulty.

I basically had the same problem.....Just wouldn't go...finally had to re-adjust the throttle cable on my 1998 Coupe.....The cable adjustment screw had backed-off and the cable slipped about a half inch. Adjusted it and off I went! (Sometimes it's simple)

I had this exact problem (I think I lived in denial over sluggish performance) and it started throwing a rich code. I had previously cleaned the MAF and replaced the TPS (it was throwing codes too) so I was thinking O2 sensors or something else. I finally gave in and took it to a dealer who must have done a better job cleaning the MAF. No codes and much better performance! Now I've got more coolant leaks and a hydraulic leak to the top to fix once I get her out of storage :(

I have the same problem on both 1997 coupe and 1999 convertible xk8. So is it a MAF problem? Should I just replace them on both cars? |

The most common one I came across (maybe OEM?) is Denso MB197400-3021, but there are others out there that fit all these cars. Yes, for those looking to buy a new MAFS, the Mazda part from the 06' Mazda 3 is identical. This is the part number 197400-2160. The sensor also has this engraved on the plastic: L321. |
Anyone know of an alternate MAF for the 4.2 S/C engine? I've spent a little time researching, but haven't found one yet.

Yep. Same thing happened to me.

don't about the 4,2 specifically, but likely, it's a rare part just like the MAF is on the 4.0 engines. I've looked high and low for a cross-referenced 4.0 MAF sensor. But the only cars that share the XKR 4.0 part are other Jaguar 4.0 supercharged engines, like the 4,0 XJR's for example.
Z http://densoautoparts.com/contact-us.aspx try this link to contact them. when i used the Denso website it produced no results for the XK8 MAF which is commonly available through many parts counters. they might not have an official record of the Jaguar installations for the reasons stated above. surely though they can match it from a part number. |
