LT 71141 transmission fluid alternative
Guys,
searching for some definitive information regarding the expensive ESSO lt 671141 transmission fluid and I stumbled across the link that I pasted in below. The link doesn't specifically call out Jaguar but it does call out BMW and Esso lt 71141Transmission fluid. Has anyone used Valvoline Max Life with success or failure? link- https://docs.google.com/file/d/1xyVU...CJjer-MK&pli=1 Barry |
Would you hesitate to use Walmart brand motor oil that said that it met 'SJ' API spec?
Castrol Import claims to meet the the LT 71141 spec at $5 a quart. |
"You might find better but you cant pay more"
I see from Rev Bob's video that he used Ford Mercon SP in his 6 speed so I wonder why not use it in the 5 speed?
I work in the medical equipment service industry for an OEM company and know first hand that in most cases proprietary parts are a huge source of "Markup" and "profit" and that in most cases a suitable alternative is available but we don't offer that information to our customers unless we are pressed very hard. I think the motto should be- "You might find better but you cant pay more" for some of the fluids and parts recommended/specified by auto companies and some other industries. I am sure this will open up more debate... |
If you want a debate transmission fluid is always a good choice. :icon_bricks:
If you read the info from Valvoline in the link they reccomend their fluid for the ZF 5 speed but specifically not for the 6 speed. I suppose the reverse should be true also? |

I'm not sure if the Valvoline product is still available. I have had it in my car for about 10,000 miles or so now. Personally I doubt that LT71141 is much more than a fancy Dexron III.
Regarding Mercon SP in a 6 speed, I don't have one so I haven't checked into it but I do know it isn't a good idea to use it where it isn't indicated on Ford products. It kind of stands by itself. |
