Default Convertible hydraulic pump always running

2000 XK8. With car running, there's a high-pitched whirring sound coming from the hydr pump when looking in the trunk. (From interior of the car it sounds more like a low drone.) The top works okay when I keep the reservoir topped up (every 2 months). (It has a slow leak in the left rear wheel well that runs out onto the ground.) Anyone know of a reason/remedy for the pump constantly running?

You sure it's the pump and not the CD or NAV making the sound?

+1 pump. If it's that loud the filter may be mostly blocked which could lead to pump failure. Just to be sure it's not the hydraulic pump, put your hand on it.

The fluid loss is due to the cylinders for the top leaking. Top Hydraulics rebuilds them. Probably time to replace the hoses, also.

Thumbs up

Good catch guys! It isn't the hydr pump afterall, it's the black box with cooling fins just below the pump that looks like an (amplifier?). It sits on top of the nav system and CD changer. For me, that's a better problem to have (if there is such a thing). Am I right about it being an amp, and should I do anything about it? Thanks

AFAIK the Alpine amp has an internal fan - possibly the bearings are getting tired and that is causing the noise?

I imagine that it's a smaller version of the cheap general-purpose type that is fitted in computers, power supplies, etc. Once they go south it's easier to replace them than attempt a repair.
