Missing VCAT Label
 

I have a 1996 Jaguar XK8 convertible which doesn’t have any V cat codes in the boot The label was removed after a car accident With Jaguar why they were servicing it I have tried to get the codes from them Unfortunately I didn’t have them anymore !!!! they said I could get them off the car of the same age and spec is this correct and how can I find these codes? as The ECU has failed and only runs on four cylinders Hope you can help Andrew

Hi Andrew,
The early ECMs are getting hard to find these days, and expensive as a consequence. Best route is to try to get yours repaired (or DIY) if possible as you won't have any compatibility issues that way.

Using VCATS information from another car would be a gamble.

One thing you could try first:- not sure which four cylinders are firing, but there are two iginition modules high on the firewall in the middle behind the motor, each serving four cylinders. Swop over the connectors to these and see if the faults move.

I do remember that PDU was able to extract the part number with the 3 digit VCATS but I have not done that since the early 2000s.

The JEPC has a statement (USE THE PORTABLE DIAGNOSTIC UNIT TO DETERMINE PART NUMBER SUFFIX) when determining the software for 'PROGRAMMABLE PARTS'
I can't remember if WDS has that capability??(or IDS for that matter)

You could use PDU/WDS/IDS to examine each module and record the suffix for future reference.
