Default Old time car water pump gasket mount question

Ok, got my 74 Olds 350 rocket. Putting on rebuilt water pump. it has a paper gasket. Do you use just that when mount or does it need any type of skim coat of liquid sealant also? Can I use a dab of the liquid sealant to hep hold gasket in place it it is to be mounted dry otherwise.

I always used sealant on those paper gaskets.

Looking at the year of the car it might be best to use a little (thin coat) of gasket sealant to hold the gasket and ensure a proper leak proof seal. A far cry from an XK8!

I'd use a smear of sealant.

I am told use dry paper gasket only and NO RTV on it. If some are putting some sealant on the dry gasket what are you using?
If I do put something on the dry gasket, do I out it on bother sides of it?

As Gus hinted, an XK8 forum is not exactly the right forum for a 1974 OLDS, but what the hell. Put sealant on both sides of the gasket.
It use to be that you put just enough sealant on so that when you tightened down the bolts (nuts) if you did it right, the sealant should ease out all around the part just enough to insure there was enough used. It's always a "Damn-it" issue if it doesn't and it leaks, so don't be afraid to use enough.

Cheers

I figured that is was a simple thing that anyone here wrenching on a XK* has been doing such work for years and would know this for even an old **** cars that many have worked on in the past. I asked various folks at work and online and it is about 50/50 in just installing the dry gasket and that's it, maybe a dab of non dry stuff to hold the gasket in place.

ON my old 327 or 350's i like to use a coat of coppre coat .just on one side of the gasket . if you do both sides you stand a chance of pushing the gasket out when tighten the bolts . if you can install hoses and fill system to check for leak before installing pullyes and belts . take your time and good luck .

Howdy folks:
I use to use a light smear of Versachem gasket sealant Type 1 on both sides. This is the brown stuff that hardens and is difficult to remove, but I find it most dependable given the circumstances (cooling system / fiber gaskets). Ref: All of my vehicles back in the day.

My 2 cents worth, Use very light coat of Hylomar (Name of sealant) on both sides and "button it up". This stuff does not harden and makes removal easy if removal needed later.
