P1474 - Restricted Performance

Hi All,

Driving 125 miles to my mothers house for Christmas in some of the worst rain I have experienced (could have done with a hull rather than a chassis) all was going well, except 5 miles from my destination the Restricted Performance message appeared.

On the way home the next day in similar weather, the car was still in restricted performance mode and after going through another particularly bad bit of standing water the Check Engine light came on.

Today I checked it with my OBDII reader, but the restricted performance message was gone. The stored codes were P1111 and P1474 (intercooler pump)

I cleared the codes and the engine check light has also gone out and the car seems to be fine. Is it possible that all that water sloshing around could have given a sensor a fit and the code clear has cured it, or should I be looking to take it straight to a garage?

Thanks to all of you on here (the result of which I have a OBDII reader and a list of the fault codes) I managed to get this far, but was wondering if anyone thinks I'm storing up a big problem?

Thanks for looking - and Happy New Year!

Neil

Neil,

The P1111 is good news because it means all OnBoard tests have been completed since the last memory clear. Now you've cleared the codes, you should see P1000 (OnBoard Tests not completed since last memory clear) until you've run enough miles to complete the cycles again.

P1474 is, as you've diagnosed, Intercooler coolant pump malfunction. When this code is set, the default temp 70 deg C / 158 deg F is used by the ECM. As the possible cause for this is Intercooler failure, it's most likely a result of driving through standing water.

Because the code hasn't reset since you cleared it, you can't have a failed IC pump. Go carefully through standing water next time!

Thanks for the re-assurance. I have taken it out for a spin this morning, including fast motorway, and all seems clear. Nice to have the ooomph back again :icon_woot:

See, if it wasn't for this place I would have taken it to the garage and they would probably say I needed a new intercooler pump ££££££££££ :icon_tongue:

Thanks again!

As far as I can see the intercoolant pump runs full time when ignition is on.
On the S/C engine there are two intake air sensors sensors, IAT1 in the MAF and IAT2.
If either of those had malfunctioned you'd get other codes so it looks simple (!!) - as Graham says - either water got into the pump or, more likely, into the connector to it.
Well worth pulling the connector, cleaning and reassembling with some silicone grease since the UK version of Noah's Flood doesn't show much sign of abatement.

Hi,

I had a restricted performance message while out driving over Christmas which cleared after parking up & restarting so is there a recommended OBDII reader for a 2004 XKR?

Thanks for your help.

From what I read on the subject, you can get a very expensive one that will 'talk' to all the various computers in the Jag and have some sort of Jag diagnostic software - or you can go for a more basic reader that will just 'talk' to the main ECU computer where many of the problems occur. I got one off ebay, just entered CAN OBD2 CODE READER and picked up a 'buy it now' version for under £20. The instructions were very simple and clear - but you will need to get hold of the Jag specific fault codes (in a PDF on a sticky at the top of the XK8/XKR page) to see exactly what your code refers to. Not aware of any difference in plug connection between my 2003 and your 2004 MY XK's in any of the posts I read.

Hope this helps - or that someone can correct me.

Jon,

Follow this link for an extensive thread on 'member approved':

For the majority of issues you'll come across, a simple Code Reader which reads P (Powertrain) Codes and allows you to clear the MIL is adequate.

Thanks for that, and where is the socket located in the car that I need to plug into?

JonWat 12-28-2012 04:14 AM

Can anyone point me to the ODBII socket on a UK car, I've looked under the dash on both the passenger & driver's side but can see nothing obvious.

Help would be appreciated, maybe a picture??

Thanks

Stick your head under and to the R (door) of the steering wheel and look up.

Got it thanks, appreciate you taking the time to answer.

OK, so I've now read the ECM using a CAN-BUS U480 reader and it gave a P1111 which is "system check complete" no action required.

Anyone know how long codes are stored in the ECM or why after showing "restricted performance" after parking up it would clear & run fine?

All ideas appreciated.

Thanks

Your reader will only find 'P' powertrain codes so the restricted performance could have been set by another part of the system, like ABS.
P1111 means the powertrain check is complete, not the whole shebang.
Have you downloaded JTIS from the How To section ?

If that's the DTC summaries or the list of codes, yes I've got that, that's where I read that P1111 meant all tests completed.

steveinfrance 12-31-2012 08:44 AM

The JTIS version of DTC has all the 'other' codes - I don't know if your version just does Pxxxx
JTIS is essential though for the service manual - all you need to know and then some.

Old thread same problem. I get an rp( restrictive performance) message and a p 1474 code. I have an OBD 2 reader.

Car drives fine, temp is fine, sprayed electronic cleaner in all the connectors in the general area as well as the intercooler recirc pump and still no change. This code seems to keep popping up. The only thing I can see is that the connector from the pump had it's leads cut off and some other spade tip abortion crimped on. I sprayed those and put back in. As the factory connector is missing is there a polarity issue maybe as my leads are 2 wires that jet jambed into the wiring harness?

Where would one get a new connector that I could butt splice on?

I guess my car in my signature didn't show up. 2004 xjr..

RJ237 12-05-2015 07:53 PM

The signature was there, but Gus was looking for a XK8 or R. I believe your forum would be X350/XJ358.
