Paint spot repair

I did something really stupid a few weeks ago when doing my front chassis welding that resulted in this crack to the paintwork on the front wing just above the bumper.

Up close, you can see the paint has lifted for about 5mm above the crack.

After a bit of picking.

Sanded.

Bondo.

Sanded again.

Epoxy primer.

Next day did the top latch hoses.

Back to it.

Sanded with 1000 grit and masked up.

A few coats of base coat applied with gun facing away from the making, the colour match looked good.

Masked up again a bit further back with a soft edge.

Next two coats of clear.

Next day I sanded round the edge of the new clear coat with 1500 grit wet and dry, then a 3000 grit 3M Trizac pad on the DA all over, then finished with a polishing compound on a rotary buff.

I am very pleased with the result, I really cant see the join.

I used this $20 mini spray gun for both the base coat and clear.

Nice job!

Lovely job

Cool!

You’re a perfectionist... and the great end result shows in the seamless paint job.

Well done, Another well documented job.
Out of curiosity what is your paint colour code ?

mine is MDZ and it's like an oyster silver colour,
log book states the colour as pink !..

I think mine could be a hard colour to mach on jobs like you have just done, i have one or two area's that i would like to sort out but don't think my skills stretch that
far (no experience of paint spraying or colour matching)
Shame as i would really like to give it a go, only thing that put's me off is getting the colour match right..

Your commitment to your car is mind-boggling. Well done....

sklimii 04-27-2019 06:55 AM

nicely done!!!

Wow nice job!

You are lucky, the wood on the dash is really nicely figured.

Did you have to deal with (iow do anything to) match(ong) faded paint on the exterior?

John

RaceDiagnostics 04-27-2019 09:26 AM

The car was originally resprayed before I bought it and the shade was slightly different to the original MDZ. A few years ago I went through the pain of trying to find the correct colour match and had to paint this wing twice before I got it right. The four coats of paint on the wing probably contributed to the cracking when I accidentally bent the inner return upwards.

However the good news was that I still had leftover paint so the match was perfect.

That brings me on to why was this car resprayed before I bought it? Well I did find traces of a slight ding/scratch just above the wheel to the right hand front fender, that must have been resprayed after the repair, then perhaps they ended up doing the entire car if they could not get a good colour match?

Well done you for taking it on. Quite a big project even for a relatively small damage. Getting paint to match is an art. Bit like hanging doors. So easy to get wrong and you only really know if its a match when the paint dries and you remove the protection from around it. So I will echo the sentiments above............. nice job.:)

XKR-DAY 04-28-2019 09:23 AM

Well i can hang door's, But it look's like i will be leaving my paint job to the professionals, When the time comes.

Once again NICE JOB............

and looking at the holes in the bench it also appears you have been removing your ABS Reluctor rings. :) At a guess a loooooooong bar job to remove.

Well spotted Frank, did the job about six years ago, the bar bent then broke and I ended up cutting them off with a dremel and hammer/chisel.

I pray I can have same results as I go into several areas that need touch up, hood, trunk lids....
