Default plan on keeping your car for 20+ years, what parts would you stock from salvage?

Who knows, I may keep it for 20+ years, are there specific parts that will become very hard to get.

Items like the alternator, seat fabric, window glass… will probably always be available aftermarket Items like the ECU will become hard to get, but I guess you will always be able to rebuild. On some of my other hobbies, I have had some parts become almost impossible to get for a reasonable cost and no alternatives existed.

Definitely all the various electronic modules as parts to rebuild them will likely become scarce also.

Anything to do with trim - assuming you want to keep it original. Trim becomes increasingly difficult to source once a car gets older.

I vote on switches as most of the ones on the MG and Triumphs broke in half back in the 90's because of heat. The guts were really just a spring with a dumb bell rolling back and forth. Same goes for the column stacks. What we have looks the same makeup. I would like to have a couple of hours to take what I could get off a wreck.

Just wish I had space for a doner for both my V8s to keep them going in the long run.

Our cars are plentiful. There will be parts for a long time. If I had the money and room I would buy as many as I could find. But alas someone else will have the money and room so I'll buy from them in 20 years.

I think the parts will be around.

I agree with trim. On one of my cira 1994 cars I need new window trim and just cant find it anywhere and used is in just as awful shape. Spend $6,000 on paint and re-use old trim.....NO...So garunteed at some point you will need a paint job..And trim...Well Id grab what I can

I don't believe I'll be willing to pay the price it will cost to keep our XK8 for twenty years. The plastics will disintegrate and the electronics will gradually die. We've had the car for just over 2.5 years. Given my wife's current annual mileage range, I predict it will finally fail the cost/benefit analysis I created for it at the time of purchase in 2018 or 2019 (if we wind up keeping it that long)....

Given the timespan you might also want to put aside a petrol/gas tanker

In 20 years I'll be lucky if I can be kept running regardless of spare parts.

Just give me the 20 years and I'll sit in the garage and watch it, if my cane doesn't break on the way down there. You think the DMV will let me drive a performance car at 94?
