Question About 20" BBS Wheels on Older Car

Hi,

I have the opportunity to get a set of 20" BBS (Sepang) wheels that I would like to put on my 2002 XKR. I realize that the long reach lug nuts are needed but would anything else need to be changed such as the wheel studs, hubs, etc? I test fit one on my existing hub and even with the long lug nut it didn't seem as though enough of the lug grabbed onto the stud (but perhaps it did and I just thought that it didn't). Anyway, if I did this, I wanted to be sure it was safe to do. This was a topic I researched but couldn't find much on. I tried to e-mail Dave at DCR but didn't get a reply so I thought I would ask here.

Thank you for any information.

Rob

I put a set of Perseus wheels on my 2003 and did not need to change the lug nuts.

That said, I HAVE found that some aftermarket lug nuts do not fit through the holes in the wheels they way they should. OEM in my experience is fine, but you might check that off the car to be sure that the shoulder of the lugs you have do fit properly THROUGH the opening of the wheel and are not getting stuck.

I had 20 inch Sepangs on my 2005 XK8 after 18 inch Impelar on my 2001 XK8. The Sepang is a beautiful wheel but the difference in ride quality going from 18 inch or even 19 inch to 20 inch is significant. Be absolutely certain you are prepared for this compromise before throwing a lot of money at the modification.

Thank you for the replies. Regarding the lugs, I would be using the stock Jaguar long reach lug nuts and regarding the ride quality, I do realize that there will be a difference. Luckily I have the opportunity to try out the wheels on the car and drive it before making the decision.

Thanks so much,

Rob

20” Sepang BBS 15 spoke

Hey, I tore up the chrome rim on rear 20” Sepang BBS on 2005 XKR. Alloy part of rim is ok but ring is destroyed. Does anyone know if that part of wheel is replaceable? If so, any place in Atlanta area? If not, how can I find a replacement for whole wheel?
Thanks

YES - it's a separate trim ring which is replaceable.

Not cheap (in the UK they are available at 125 UKP) but a lot less than a replacement Sepang wheel which is becoming very hard to find.

They are polished stainless though, so the damage might be repairable by someone with metal working skills, if it is not hurt too bad.

Thanks to GGG and CCFulton

Not sure if this is any use, but I'm pretty sure BBS used to have (or maybe still does have) a location in or around Atlanta. There's gotta be someone who can fix those wheels.

Some shops just remove the trim ring and polish the rim underneath, followed up with clear coat. Two of mine are like that, and they're pretty solid looking. Deathly afraid of curbing them, though.

Bear in mind that the convertible has softer suspension than the coupe and more body flex, so bigger wheels don't make as much difference on the convertible. I went from an XKR coupe with the 18" Double 5 wheels to an XKR convertible with 20" Detroits. The convertible is, if anything, more comfortable than the coupe.

Thanks for the thoughts. The Sepang wheel itself (barrel and spider) are fine and I have replaced the Mich tire (I always get the Road Hazard Warranty) with no problems. But the trim ring is destroyed in two places (see image). I doubt anyone can 'repair' it, so I'm gonna have to replace it. Anything els I should order with it that might be needed during replacement?
Thanks,

The titanium bolts are fixed with Loctite and torqued by Superman. Be prepared for a fight. :icon_lol:

You will need to have the spline bit. 12 point M8 l think. There are trim ring replacement guides available online to give you a good idea of procedure.

One thing no one has mentioned so far.......... you do know that the front any rear tyres/tires are different sizes dont you?

As for th rims as mentioned before they are separate and expensive. I had my wheel refurbished when I first got the car, not a cheap thing to do click me to see damage
Then my wheel after, the others were the same. click me and take a look
