Racing clutch for ZF 6HP26 ... what you need for your upgrade car !!

but... max 1000 hp!! :-)

Hmmm didn't even know this was available!

The Ford guys have proven that the 6HP26 and its relatives can take a lot of power. Our Australian friends seem to be especially adept and modifying them.

Here's a video from Exedy on how the transmission goes together:

I wonder if the stage 2 affects driveability at all

ccfulton Feb 4, 2014 03:36 PM

I had an email exchange with an engineer at Exedy and his take was that it would be hardly noticeable in daily driving and shouldn't affect the shift quality. What they really give is more holding power.

I had hoped it might firm up the shifts, but he was pretty confident that it would not. I suppose that makes sense since the TCM will adapt to the higher friction to maintain the same Jaguarness (i.e. laziness) in the shift quality.

I haven't had anything that even remotely resembles the transmission slipping even with the twin screw, so I don't think that they are necessary for anything but the most ridiculous amounts of power.

When the time comes to rebuild the transmission then the upgraded clutches might be worth a look.

What I've been keeping my eye out for is an upgrade to the Mechatronic that would firm up the shifts, similar to the blue top solenoid option in the Merc 5spd transmission.

I've seen some snake oil things but there doesn't seem to be much out there for the 6HP26. Could be because ZF did it themselves and called it a 6HP28.

Im thinking of going with it just because I have the lurch

avos Feb 5, 2014 12:58 AM

If its just the clutches for it to handle 1000 hp, than its already way stonger in base than the MB unit, very impressive!

ccfulton Feb 5, 2014 05:48 AM

To be fair, you would need a billet intermediate shaft and probably a stronger torque converter to get to that level, but the casing, gear sets and valve body seem to take it pretty well.

Michael,
I am not sure that the clutches alone would do much for a lurch, but if you are planning to have it all apart for a valve body rebuild makes perfect sense to do the clutches too and basically have a new transmission.

I would be interested to hear your experience if you do make the leap.

Those aussie guys and their fords are really pushing the ZF 6HP26 to insane levels proving the top quality of the gearbox.

Fortunately the 6hp26 is fitted on several cars brands, engine and drivetrain type (petrol, diesel, awd, rwd) which promote the aftermarket R&D. But i doubt that the input shaft, intermediate shaft or sumps is interchangeable in all cars.
