Remote Locking problem
 

Hi there, my father has just bought a 2005 XKR 4.2, (one of the last XK100s they produced). When the car was bought both fobs worked absolutely fine locking the car and operating the headlights. As of last night both fobs have stopped working. The car does not respond at all. I have checked batteries and done the reprogramming procedure.

When initiating the programming procedure the red light on the J gate flashes meaning it's ready to accept a Fob but pressing the buttons on either of the fobs does absolutely nothing. This tells me something else is a miss.

I tried pulling the fuse for the locking and security system and putting it back hoping that turning off and on would sort it but that also isn't the case.

So what else could it be, anyone's help is appreciated.

Very unlikely for both remotes to fail simultaneously. Also unusual for problems with the security module.

One common cause of such instantaneous failure is the connection to the security antenna coming adrift. It's top centre on the inside of the rear window on the coupe. I don't know where it is on the convertible.

The antenna on the vert is under the right rear cap, sorry don't know what it's called, above the right sub woofer.

I've had a look for the antenna connection around the subwoofer near the rear shelf and I can't seem to locate it. I've also found a module under the fuse box that says 433Mhz and followed the antenna wire coming from it but unfortunately it just snakes back into the wiring loom without a clear exit point.

I've figured it out now, the antenna wire coming from the security module was snagged by the battery and therefore damaged. If you hold the key directly next to the box the fobs work as normal.
I don't want to replace the whole antenna but instead just re terminate the antenna wire. The snagged section is quite close to the connector so it won't be hard to do.
What I'm having trouble working out is the type of connector the module uses. Does anyone know what type it is? It's screw on but it doesn't look like rp-sma.

I do not know the connector type, but even if you had the connector, it might be difficult to terminate reliably without a matching crimp tool. It might be less hassle to just replace the antenna with a new or used one.

Good to hear you've found the source of the problem.

If you post a photo of the connector, I'm sure Steve (WhiteXKR) the forum electronics guru will be able to identify it.

Pretty sure it's a normal male (i.e. not rp) SMA other than that, on mine at least, it has a knurled nut rather than the hex in the picture:

However, as Steve says, they're normally crimped so fitting a new plug is a little more challenging.

Sorry for the late reply, I've had a look again and I don't think it is SMA at all, it is female type connector with the thread on the plug instead of the socket. Any ideas what this is?

It looks like an FME connector.

What does the other end of the cable look like?

Apologies Saajan_B and thanks pbuck for the correction. I should have paid more attention when I had the SLM out. My memory clearly isn't to be trusted these days.

I think SMA might have been a better choice as the specs show for use up to 200MHz only.

This model has the center solder terminated, but the shell is still crimped.

I'm not sure what the other end is as it goes into the loom. I've ordered an fme connector that doesn't look too hard to solder on.
