Removing fuel sender

I have a bad fuel sender on my 1999 XK8. Is it necessary to have the fuel level below a certain point before removing the sender?

Obviously without the sender working I don't have a good way of telling how much fuel is in the tank, but I don't want fuel to come pouring into the trunk when I remove the sender if the level is too high.

So basically, I'm trying to find out how much fuel can be in the tank when the sender is removed, if that's making any sense....

Jim,
I just had the sender out in my 2000 XKR and you should be safe at a quarter tank. When your ready to remove the sender, take out the spare tire and put a container under the opening and must of the gas will go into the container.I used a clean oil changing pan.Its an easy item to do.Good luck
