Restricted Performance - an unusual solution

Hello all,

I am new at this but have had a Jaguar Dealer work on my 1999 XK8 for months trying to resolve the infamous " Restricted Performance " light. I will try to make the explanation short.

I purchased the XK8 about a year ago. It had only 23,0000 miles on it. I knew that the timing chain tensioners needed to be replace. I had the Jag Dealer do the work to make sure they knew what they were doing. Los, I asked them to resolve the Restricted Performance error light that kept coming on. The error codes indicate multiple misfires. The Dealer spent weeks replacing various parts trying to get the light to stay off. Then one evening the four mechanics that were taking turns working on my Jag were taking to an old time mechanic that mention they might want to check out the Power Steering pulley. Why? It might be out of round. The mechanics checked it out and found that some time in the past the power steering pulley bolts were loose and had worn the bolt holes oblong. Then tightened down. This was causing the sensors to record a misfire as the power steering pulley turned unevenly. They replaced the pulley, a $ 60 item, and all the error messages have gone away. All the mechanics were high fiving each other. I have driven the XK8 for 3,000 miles error free.

I hope this helps others who might be getting the same error messages.

I have not seen this resolution on any JAG message boards and thought some may find this of interest.

By the way, I have to thank the Jag dealer for getting this fixed for me without a huge expense.
