Screenwash Tank Leak. Grommet replacement - any ideas?!?

Hello All, When I bought my XK8 last year the seller mentioned the grommet that seals the screen wash filler tube into the body of the screen wash tank was missing (Part No JLM20565) - the low screen wash warning appears frequently as you can only partially fill the tank. I ordered a replacement but I'm having a terrible time fitting it.

If i set the grommet in the correct place on the tank, then push the filler tube in, the grommet pops into the tank. I managed to get it out - and the original one that was in there as well!!

If i put the grommet around the tube then push it onto the tank it does not seat properly - the 'far' side does not seal and leaks. Its a pretty tight fit and i just cannot seem to get it on right.

Any advice other than removing the nosecone for better access (Which I find rather daunting and would rather not do). Its not a huge issue but I'd like it on right.

Thanks!!

Charlie and the Windsheild Washer!!

Charlie,

I am attaching a Diagram of the Windshield Washer Bottle....Maybe this will help determine which Washer/Grommet you are talking about....You will have to remove the Bottle unless you can figure a way to get to it from inside the Engine Compartment or through the Wheel Well cover.....I think you can remove the wheel well cover and get to it as it just right there by the Left front wheel. This diagram is from Jerry's Jaguar Parts and they usually have these parts...…

Charlie, Which Grommet are you talking about?

Thanks Billy - number 3 on the diagram. I can get to it through the wheel well cover but I'm struggling to get the filler tube back through the grommet without pushing the grommet back into the tank.

I've had a suggestion of using silicon to coat the hose to make it go in more easily, so may try that tomorrow.

Charlie,

I haven't had the pleasure of having to replace any of those little Grommets but it makes sense to use some silicon or something like that to make it a little slicker....My Bottle appears to be inside the wheel well just behind the Headlight.....I watched the guys take the Bottle out to drill the hole for my Snow Performance Water/Methional injection System. I use the Bottle to provide the good stuff to the Throttle Body when the Pressure get up around 9 lbs.

Hope this works!

Thanks. Will give it a go tomorrow 👍

Silicon did the trick! Grommet in place.

bcprice36 03-10-2019 02:22 PM

/tell me how you got to it! Did you have to take the wheel lining off?......Sorry, I have forgotten what I did....

With the wheel well cover removed (the one that’s kind of like an inspection plate) I could reach in and seat the grommet- with the silicon on the hose I was able to gently push it into place - the silicon made all the difference. 👍

So! Charlie....Are you a Certified Jaguar Mechanic now? Have you tried the Washer yet? and does it work?

As I told you, I use mine for the Water/Methional mixture, rather than having a special Bottle for it...It is a space saver for me + it tells me when I need a refill on the Speedometer...….and because the mixture is Water & Methanol, you can use it to Wash your windshield....
It just smells and little like Methanol..

Haha long way to go yet on the mechanic front! It does not leak so i think I'm good.

Next job is to change the shifter surround which is cracked.

Sounds like a nice setup you have there with the methanol!

Charlie, Of all the things I've tried!

Along with the Methional, the Larger Intercooler also made a difference.....An old "Hotrodder" once told me years ago, that if you make some change and you can feel it, you've probably added 15 to 20 HP....I don't notice the Intercooler's effect much any more as I'm use to it but when you get into the Water...I can still feel it coming on....I don't know the Dyno changes as I have not done any Dyno stuff.....Maybe after a while I will do one...………..That would be interesting! Now that I have it running better.....

Nice - sounds like a bit of a beast! Would be good to do a Dyno run to see what she puts out!

bcprice36 03-11-2019 12:40 PM

Charlie,
You're right! I should Dyno it but I don't think that will make is run any faster....but your right, I should and I guess I will someday soon....I think it cost round $250.00 Bucks to do that.....I don't know for sure....I'm busy right now trying to keep up the all the little things that go wrong with an old XKR.....Like right now I'm in the middle of having to replace the Purge Valve.....and guess what? I can't find one for my VIN …..still looking for it! The one that's on it now was put in place back in 2004....but it's the newest model valve and Jaguar doesn't stock it anymore.....Seems that if it was designed by Ford, they have quit stocking it!!!! Working with Terry's Jaguar Parts right now and "hoping" they have one!!!!

That's a pain on the purge valve. Any on eBay? Or worth posting in the Marketplace as wanted?

bcprice36 03-11-2019 02:23 PM

Now they are telling me that the Part # on my Purge Valve is from an "S" Type not a XKR.....Go figure!
I ordered the "S" Type Valve as it is the same as the one on the Car. Should solve the problem of it dying all the time , after Missy fills it with Gas on Saturdays....Apparently, Jaguar choose this style and placed it in the back of the front fender well as there wasn't enough room under the hood (Bonnet).

I found another article on the Washer Bottle connections and they had done the job the same way you did, except they used silicone aquarium Sealant, which I guess would withstand the water longer! Although, that may have been what you used on yours...

Finger crossed that part does the trick for you!

I used normal silicon grease, no leaks so far!

Rosettaquarrier 03-13-2019 10:59 PM

Oh no! Hope you get it fixed

funracer 03-13-2019 11:10 PM

Not yet but its on my list of things to do when I remove the wheel well liner.

Rosettaquarrier 03-14-2019 09:47 AM

I've got a laundry list I'm working on on mine; it's a labor of love...
