So getting a slight makeover
Well being someone slid into the back end of my XKR over the winter and damaged the bumper and decklid I decided to respray the entire car..What color you ask? Matte black again! Now the real question here is I'm having the antenna hole closed up for a variety of reasons. One my antenna broke long ago...Two It looks silly anyway.
So what good windshield or otherwise antenna have people had good luck with? Thanks! |
The great Rev. Sam used this approach:
|
I used a TuneTrapper mounted inside the rear bumper. A few other members had used them with a decent experience.
Tune Trapper Hidden AM FM Antennas For Cars, Motorcycles, Boats, Stereos, Radios Seems to work well enough, although I don't use the radio all that much. |
I don't use the radio much either which is why I never fixed it. Im going to check out that bumper antenna..I had seen the rev sam video but I wasn't sold on all that..Just knowing it was there
|
Charlie which one did you buy? what length wire? Thanks!
|
It's been a while but 98% sure it was the 6' model. Definitely the end feed type.
Tune Trapper Hidden AM FM Antennas For Cars, Trucks, RV's, Tractors, Golf Carts, Vehicles That's enough length you can put it in the middle of the rear bumper from underneath and sneak the wire up through the body grommet on the right side near the antenna. I was never bale to figure out what the heck kind of connector the vehicle antenna has though. Ended up lopping the end off the new antenna and inventing my own connection. |
|
That's not what the connector is.
It looks similar, but the jag one is a different diameter. I bought the metra adapter thinking the same thing and ended up hacking it apart to make the connection. At least was able to leave the car side of the harness alone. |
Ok Im going to wait till I get car back to order anything:O)

Antenna change
Please test and see if your AM radio is working. The outside mast antenna has a ground point on it that allows AM reception. The Dipole antenna you have has no such provision and is very directional. There are several "car stereo" aftermarket antennas available that will allow AM reception. The OEM antenna is a Hirschmann and is a VERY high quality piece. You will not get that good of reception from any other non outside mast antenna. Do yourself a favor and see what adapters are available at your local Car Stereo Store....if there are any left. All that said, if you only want FM, just stick a 5 foot plain single wire into center of the connector at the antenna cable in the trunk and run it in as big a cirle as you can under the rear tray and DONE. 40 years working with car stereos. Good luck Will
