Tapping noise when very cold outside

Hi all,

This is my first Winter (Norway) in my XKR-S (MY 2006). I am getting a tapping noise that seems to come from the left hand side foot well. It is present when the engine is warm and the temp. outside is below 0 deg. C. The rate is constant with no change regardless of rpm., at idle or cruising on motorway. Noise seems louder with even lower temperatures.

Towards the end of the attached video you can hear it best after I open the door. My first attempt at downloading video here so I hope it works). The video was taken in minus 4 deg. C. and the engine was warm. I have searched the forum here and see that a "Purge Valve" could be the culprit but I do not smell the petrol fumes that are supposed to accompany this problem. Could it be something else?

Hope someone here can shed some light on the situation. Thanks.

The simple answer is to move somewhere that it doesn't get that cold. Fifty outside going to mid 50's.

That's just some squirrel trying to get in from the cold.

If it's at all like the XJ8's there is some emission plumbing located behind the left front wheel well inner liner so you could be hearing noise from there.

Cold weather and noises from underneath a running car can play all kinds of tricks on a persons ears

Hi.
Hard to diagnose from only the noise clip.
Common problem also in VIN ranges outside those mentioned in TSB.
Remove inner liner left wheel well to be sure before ordering any parts.
Check for fuel smell, if none clicks are just annoying and will go away when it gets warmer.
Read codes to be sure you have no malfunctions in system.
Different setups for different VIN-ranges and markets.

There is no smell of petrol, just the ticking noise. It seems to go away when the temp. is above 0deg C. Car is still under warranty so I will have it looked at by the dealer. But any info that helps me communicate better to the dealer is an advantage. Thnaks.
