is there an easy way to replace fog light button ?

2002 XKR:

I have non-operational button on the narrow console panel that houses the Trac Off / Seat Heater / Fog light / Emergency Flasher buttons..

The front fog light button takes a lot of fiddling around and nudging it up and down before it makes contact and turns the fog lights on.
The factory way to replace the panel involves first taking off the surrounding leather rim, the entire console, and shifter bezel. To me, this method looks like a very good opportunity to crack the area around the shifter and who knows what other disasters await.

My question is this, will the individual buttons come out without breaking anything ?

I'm guessing there is a plastic nub on the back side of the Fog light button that has either worn down or partially broken off. If someone tells me that I can pry the button straight out without braking anything, then I'll try that. I'm reluctant to go that way on my own in fear of breaking something.

I bought a used panel that has a good positive feel to all of the buttons. So I have a replacement part in hand. If it is possible to successfully pry out an individual button I will try that. But if you knowledgable sages warn me off of that idea. I'll just live with fog light issue until something else goes wrong in the console, necessitating a more critical repair.

thanks.

When I was recently replacing some bulbs I had that button apart.

The button covers will pry off but I am not sure how you would apply the leverage needed while it is still in the dash.

Here are a couple pics of what those buttons look like apart .

So is the black outside cover to the button a snap fit over that inner white part ? i.e. , it's not glued on.

Removing Centre console isn’t hard

i wouldn’t be too concerned with removing the Centre console. If you have the replacement Centre panel, that’s probably the easiest way to go. Trying to replace one dodgey button risks breaking your replacement unit. .

Sam1174 has a good YouTube video which I followed and once the JGate gearshift surround is out, the actual removal of the leather Centre console surround is easy. Then you can slide out all 3 control units.

With the the age of our cars, the Centre consoles have plastic surrounds screwed into the dash. The plastic will be brittle so be gentle. Use WD40 prior to attacking these screws .... cautiously

Yes the covers just pop off, and easily once the unit is out of the dash.
