Tyre sizes?
 

Looking to purchase a new set of tyres for my 2002 XKR. currently I have 245/45r18s on the front and 255/45r18s on the rear.

My question is has anyone ever tried a non staggered set up? For example 245s all the way around?

Any issues with over/understeer or tramlining?


Trying to get as much longevity out of them as possible haha

First of all: What size are your Wheels?

If they are Staggered Wheels, why would you want the same size Tires all around? If they are not Staggered why do you have different size Tires on them now?

If they came with Staggered Wheels, Jaguar meant for you to use Staggered Tires......

Currently, it's the stock wheels 245/45r18 [18x8] fronts, and 255/45r18 [18x9] rears.

The main reason to keep the tire size the same all the way around is the ability to rotate them and get better life out of the tyres.
I'm mostly curious if it's been done or is possible.

I have to agree with Houston. If you are going to a different wheel size where all 4 are the same width, then OK, get 4 identical tires. but sticking with the factory wheels I think you are better off with the original staggered set-up.

My rear tires just got replaced due to wear, but my front tires are not far behind them. I don't think the savings you will get by doing a front to back rotation is going to substantial enough to merit the switch in tire size. Plus the look of the car will be slightly different, and not in a positive way, imho.

Of course it has been done.....but to what savings? Hmmm! maybe 100 Bucks.….or maybe not!

Yes - I have 245/45/R17 on all corners of my 1999 XK8 4.0L na, but for very particular reasons. I get a lot of flat tyres in Bahrain too esp. as I've in the construction trade and visit a lot of building sites. Having a 245/45/R17 spare wheel in my boot covers all 4 corners.

I wouldn't do this by choice though. As you have a XKR, a performance X100, I would advise you to stick to stock. IMHO rotating tyres to save a few USD100s on a performance car wouldn't be right. Smoke a few 11s on the tarmac road is half the fun of your car.

The real problem is what will happen when you start rotating these wheels-------Think about it a moment....! You've got a Wheel that's 8" on the rear and a Wheel that's 9" wide on the front...Is there a reason that Jaguar staggered the wheels with the smaller one on the front.....Sure there is.....the 9" is going to hit the Front Fender when you turn...Plus I'm sure it won't drive well with a 8" on the left Front and a 9" on the Right...…..

Agreed that the reverse stagger might be weird, but I don't think he'd have issues running 9" front wheels. That's what you and I have. As long as he doesn't go above 255 in the front, should be good. You can mount a 265 on the 9" wheel, but it'll rub in the front as far as I know.

Sorry Everyone BUT.....The Car was not designed to do the things that Mr. Bcrary3 wants to do! I don't care what he does but it's wrong for the XKR! If he wants to do this and is so worried about the Dollar, maybe he should have bought a different Car...

I should clarify--I don't think running different width front wheels is a good idea, even if the tire width is the same. I would only run a square setup and attempt to rotate the wheels if all the wheels themselves were the same dimensions (i.e. if you had 18x8 all around).

As I previously said all my tyres are 255s and i agree with not rotating the front and rear wheels but don't always take jaguars design word as god,thermostat housing, tensioners, water pumps but to name a few, thay didn't always get it right

Also, with a lot of parts, they're not even jaguar design. Manufacturers often put their name on a third party part as the approved part. When I pulled my injectors last year (which were original), they were branded Denso and Ford. Idler pulley is shared with Acuras. Water pump is shared with a ford thunderbird IIRC. List goes on and on, it's across most manufacturers.

That said, obviously, messing with wheels is a bit different, as it can have many downstream effects on other components and throw things out of balance. But what's being proposed is not that extreme, at least if done conscientiously. David Yau (a pretty frequent poster) runs 245/45/17s rather than 245/50/17s due to constraints of living in Bahrain. He's got no issues, if I recall correctly.
