What is the best year for a convertible XKR?
Hello,
I am new to your wonderful forum. My wife and I are juggling with the idea of buying another convertible. We currently have a Lexus RX400h hybrid that we bought used last year. This vehicle took the place of an M3 convertible that we really liked but was not practical for my wife's long drive (new job). Fast forward to now and my wife's commute is much shorter now.
We have been kicking around selling the RX400h and buying another M3... until I started reading about the XKR. I know that it is a very different car than the M3, but we like to try different cars from time to time (that's why we buy used).
Like the M3, the XKR prices are all over the place... I have narrowed my search to 04 to 06, since they are in my price range. I have seen an XKR-100 convertible with 25k miles in the mid $20,000... and 2006 XKR's in the high $20's with similar miles...
Does anyone have any suggestions to help with my search? We live in the MD/DC area, so we are fortunate to be near several dealers...
Are there any common problems that I should be on the lookout for? My wife likes the Bluetooth cell connection on the RX and of course the heated seats.
Of course, the rear seats appear very small and that may be a problem. We still have a 16 year old who is almost 5-10. My wife is 5-05 and I am 5-09. When we would drive to the beach last year with the M3, she would sit behind my son in the passenger seat... She was fine for the 3 hour drive as long as the son kept his seat up. Is this a pipe dream?
Thanks, Joe

Back seat room is non-existent for anything but animals and children 5 and under. I had a teenager in the back for 10 minutes and she complained for 20 after getting out. I'm afraid if you're looking for a car w/ rear leg room, you're going to be disappointed.
As for year models, there's a few cosmetic differences for each year, and you really can't go wrong with either an 04, 05 or 06. guts are all the same, very reliable.
you'll get heated seats on any XK in that range, not sure about bluetooth on those. Only problem we have seen 'feature-wise" is the GPS map discs will not be update for the Alpine systems, only the denso...which I don't think the 06's had, but maybe they did. Last map update was the 2004 version. <- old!
These convertibles are a blast to drive, one thing they worked over the years on is the occupant-windblown factor..not sure what the technical term is, but unless you're doing over 45 or so, you get little, if any wind hitting you from rear and sides. I do like that in this car.
There are a few issues that will most likely come up, top hydraulics, perhaps an engine mount, suspension bushings, steering column tilt/reach motors...we've covered alot of these in our various posts. I'd recommend reading thru the last 6 months of topics in the XK section, gathering information on whatever you can and weigh.
All the best of luck Joe!

These are really great cars at wonderful prices used. The rear seats were not designed for human habitation however. By '03 the majority of the issues had been resolved so discount most of the problem discussion you find on previous MYs. The top latch hydraulic issue was never fixed and you will eventually encounter that ($200 DIY, $1200 dealer).
Remember the son is not going to get smaller. If you can deal with the rear seat, go for it.
