windows not going up when I close the door
 

I have a convertible 2000 xk8. When i get out of the car the windows go down which of course are supposed to. When I close the door, the will not go back up. And if you open and shut the door again, the windows will go down a bit more. Any ideas on what this could be? This happens on both doors. Thanks so much!!

You need to reset the windows as they have lost their position memory. With the door closed, hold the down switch until the window is all the way down. Keep holding the button until a faint, almost inaudible click. Power the window back up and hold the switch until you hear another faint click. You will need to do this to both windows. This usually is an indication of a low voltage condition.

Sounds like the windows need to be reset. WIth the windows up and the doors shut, lower both windows and continuously hold the buttons until you hear a soft click in a second or two. Then with the windows down rasie the windows and hold the buttoons again until you clear the click.

If the problem keeps recurring, you battery is likely weak and needs a charge or replacement.

Successive lowering is nearly always a reset problem. Your problem is just a bit different.

I had this problem also at first, but I see you may have fixed it.

Just as a precautionary measure, check the bolt on the left side fusebox. Open the driver side door, take the fuse box panel off (which you can see when the door is open only). Check and/or tighten the bolt holding the fusebox. It caused all sorts of havoc when mine was loose.

I also had this problem. Did the reset and would work for a while and then go back to not closing. Battery was working fine as far as I could tell. Had it tested and was a little weak under stress. Replaced battery... no more problem since.

I too have just fixed the problem with windows not returning to uppermost position. I was the battery, the former owner had installed a Bosch that was going bad. Jaguar original from main dealer fixed the following:

- Side Windows not returning upwards,

- DSC error warning for 1 second when turning on the ignition key.

- Occasionally no response from starter engine.

The entire electrical system is now working flawlessly. So for me an original battery meant 85 Euros extra in exchange for another 5 years without this kind of trouble.

The only thing it didn't fix is the squeaks and rude behaviour from the gearbox. This would of course be adressed by the oil additive TSB.

I had this happen on the passenger door and thought it was an electrical glitch.
Didn't know about the reset...easy fix...thanks guys!

Many have noted here, and it is my experience, that our Jags are surprisingly sensitive to battery voltage. I had the window reset issue along with other occasional electrical oddities that were corrected with a fresh battery.

This forum fixed my problem as discussed above. It is really great to have a forum like this so I don't have to go to the shop for every easily fixable problem I have with my XL8. Thanks.

Worked like a charm on my 2001 XK8 roadster! I had already added this problem to my service checklist when I thought of checking with the Forum. Thanks so much for this site and the great advice.

Battery was my problem
 

I had the same problem on an XKR 2005 and it was simply the battery, the car had been in storage for a couple of years and the battery had drained and been charged a few times just to start her up which killed it and although the battery started the car fine it didn't have the correct voltage to hold all the memory settings, as a point the seat memory button also was loosing the seat position.

The window problem is really a gift. Our cars are very sensitive to voltage changes. The window screwing up is a tap on the shoulder telling you to get battery checked. Jack

Unfortunately, I started to have the same problem as "jhenryr" recently. Window goes down and resetting does not cure the problem. Only driver side window is malfunctioning, passenger side window works flawlessly. Any advice on this situation?

Do you have a digiital multimeter? Can you measure the voltage across your battery after the car has been off at least 8 hours and report it back? If not, take the battery to Advance Auto or Autozone for a free test.

As the passenger side is working, you'll be familiar with the sound of the 'soft click' as the window limits switches are reset.

Do you hear this same click on the driver's door?

If not, the limit switches are suspect.
